Has anyone eaten in a Sleb Chef's restaurant?

Following on from the Little Chef/Heston thread I was wondering if anyone had actually eaten in the Fat Duck or maybe another sleb chef's caff restaurant.

Was it worth the money and what it was like?

ate in the Seafood Restaurant in Padstow and yes, it was fab. But I actually preferred St Petroc's Bistro (also owned by Rick Stein but a bit cheaper)

TsarChasm · 20/01/2009 16:37

Ah Rick Stein..Oooh yes his restaurant sounds wonderful

Yep, but only because it was near not because it was a celebrity chef. And we won't be eating there again after going flying on their floor.

vonsudenfed · 20/01/2009 16:43

Yes, Seafood Restaurant too - and the tasting menu at the Fat Duck a few years ago. It was, quite simply the best food I have ever had.

And the dark-haired one of the Two Fat Ladies cooked for us at some works do years and years ago, but I can remember nothing about the food whatsoever.

At Jamie Oliver's 15 when it first opened. FOod was OK but hugely overpriced. And the service was not good enough.

pagwatch · 20/01/2009 16:47

I have eaten at 15 too. About a year ago.
It was pretty good.

Ate at Brian Turner's place. Does he count? Food was v nice. We went back a 2nd time.

Also got fish and chips from Rick Stein's chippy. That was alright.

i've eaten at the fat duck, 15 in london and newquay and rick steins.

we did the infamous tasting menu at the fat duck and i still grimace at the thought of it! it started out as a real treat and was really interesting but then as wierder and wierder shit turned up at the table and us sinking glass after glass of wine we just ended up horribly shit faced and a bit green round the gills....! It was a present from dh after having dd1 - my first night out and I don't think I was properly up for that sort of experience!

I will never forget that food though...even through the drunkeness.

15 in newquay was my fave just for the view, food, staff and price. really nice - table on the balcony looking out to sea eating delish food.

My sister often eats at Rick Stein's in Padstow and seems to think it is worth the money and the wait.

She ate at Gary Rhodes recently but I don't remember what she said about that [unhelpful]

Le Manoir is great. And it's not that expensive, by Top Restaurant standards (hotel is very expensive, though, although lovely).

pindywopwop · 21/01/2009 05:48

We have been to River Cottage place a few times. It is fab, a whole experience and really lovely food.

Portofino · 21/01/2009 07:21

We went to Madhur Jaffrey's restaurant in NY and she was cooking that night. It was fab!

escape · 21/01/2009 07:28

Gary Rhodes In Dubai, the food is fab, and whilst he's obv. not cooking his around every few weeks or so.
The food is fabulous there.

Wow I'm impressed at you all - especially your big list fymandwhenisthisbabycoming. I think I need to make more effort to get further than the local pub Sunday lunch then!

We went to Marcus Waring at the Berkley before Christmas. It was amazing.
I have eaten in Marco Pierre whites restaurants, um one in holland pk I think? Which was pretty crap tbh and one in Soho which was actually really good and great value.
there is a restaurant owned by one of those ready steady cook chefs near us and I have been there and it was quite nice but not amazing. Tony Tobin I think is his name.

I have a feeling I am missing out a few that I just can't remember.

TsarChasm · 21/01/2009 09:33

What I wonder though is do you er...get enough to eat in sleb places?

Watching Heston on tv it looks very pretty etc and I know he slaves over it but every dish looks the size of a vol-au-vent.

never come away hungry!

oh also been to the waterside inn (roux bros)

we tend to do it for special occasions - have also been to quite a few non-sleb posh restaurants and they've all been pretty good...

MummyDoIt · 21/01/2009 10:15

Went to Rick Stein's bistro when we were on holiday in Cornwall. We couldn't go to the restaurant as they don't take kids and we had DS1 who was a baby at the time. It was great, though. Also went to Le Manoir Au Quatre Saisons (Raymond Blanc) for our one-night honeymoon. Fabulous!

Cies · 21/01/2009 11:34

I've been to Gordon Ramsey's at Claridges. Fantastic. My cousin is sous-chef there so we got a bit of special treatment, but even so the food was spectacular. A wonderful experience.

purpleduck · 21/01/2009 11:59

Never been to a sleb place - but went to Quaglino's - which was apparently re -launched by Terence Conran...??

Anyhoo, it was expensive, and the mange tout were GREY!

AmIOdetteOrOdile · 21/01/2009 12:02

I've eaten at Rick Stein in Padstow twice. First time okay, second was totally ordinary. Much preferred his fish and chip shop.
Ate in Gary Rhodes quite a few years back - absolutely divine.
Went to Criterion a few years ago - overrated.

And The Ivy, which used to be great, is now crapola.
