So, how far would you go to get your DCs to eat...?!

My DS -15mo- has been ill for a bit and off food. He is well now but it has taken a while for him to get back in the swing of it so I was determined to get him to eat a proper meal tonight. It took 3 musical snowglobes, a calpol box (worn as a hat), a plastic alien (thrown onto floor with dramatic 'oh no's), a gorilla impression and an episode of teletubbies but I did it. I'm knackered now!

So please, cheer me up by telling me all the ridiculous things you've done to get food down your DCs throats, whatever their age!

you're going to look back on this evening with fond memories

Seriously though - he's been ill - cut out the one woman entertainment show and he'll get going again of his own accord and not be expecting full on entertainment rights in the process!

pointydog · 19/01/2009 19:23

I wouldn't go far at all. If they're hungry, they'll eat, is what I've found.

beansmum · 19/01/2009 19:25

I go as far as making some food and putting it on a plate.

StirlingTheStrong · 19/01/2009 19:29

Sorry, I dont do entertaining - I make good food and they had better eat it!!

rubyslippers · 19/01/2009 19:31

if my DS is hungry he will eat

if he isn't he won't

i don't do party tricks or offer alternatives now he is 2.5 years

it can take ages for toddlers ot get their appetites back after an illness - i wouldn#t worry too much - a mouthful or two may be all he wants

I'm another member of the eat-if you-are-hungry brigade too.
I watch my friends tie thamselves in knots trying to cajole their kids into eating stuff. Guess I am lucky ds eats reasonably most of thte time?

anotheryearanothername · 19/01/2009 19:50

Oh well, thanks for making me feel so much more cheerful.

sorry, year. I thought someone else might have come on with similar experiences to you.

Don't feel down. You don't ever have to do it again

anotheryearanothername · 20/01/2009 07:22

Thanks, dog. I'm not going to! It was just something I felt I had to do to tip him into eating- it worked! He only woke once in the night for the first time ever (!) and woke up this morning and ate a huge breakfast! I did BLW so I am normally in the same camp as you. I just thought someone else may have a funny story, but it was clearly not my night!

I found it amusing! I always say that I will leave it up to him but end up putting on a show - usually involving shouting at the dog, running from crocodile who lives behind the sofa and snake who lives beneath the high chair.

skramble · 20/01/2009 23:10

Also of the sit down and eat it opinion, if they don't eat it well thats thats, they wait until the next meal.

entertainment, coaxing and bribery is a slippery slope to apearing on that toddler big brother type programme .

anotheryearanothername · 21/01/2009 08:35

PMSL jimmyjammys!Good for you! Mad mothers unite!

skramble- one mother's slippery slope is another's ascent to parenting glory, don't you know!

  • nothing quite so full scale production, anotheryear but I've been known to get through several verses of 'How much is that doggy in the window" just to make a meal go a bit more smoothly.

Well, in M&S cafe I've pretended that there's a monster living in the sandwich bag the kid's meal comes in...

Flower3545 · 22/01/2009 08:44

I once sat on my kitchen floor with a bowl of food trying to persuade a lo to eat. He refused to sit in his high chair, arching his back, kicking screaming, the lot.

Eventually I put his dummy in my mouth and put a mob-cap type hat on my head and he laughed so much he forgot his strop and began taking food.

However............taking the hat off before I went into our front street would have been an idea I totally forgot I had it on much to the amusement of some of my neighbours

I still whenever I bump into them!
