What meals do your children help cook

I want to get the children more involved in cooking their meals in the hope that they will enjoy trying new foods.

So I thought chicken kebabs, stirfry, carbonara, and Quesadilla's. But what else? They are extremely fussy so it has to be easy/fun to make and not to fussy food wise

Well dd (3.6) loves to whisk the eggs for me when I make French Toast.

We have that at lunch time for a light meal

My reasonably fussy ds made tuna/salmon fishcakes with me using Jamie's recipe from Ministry of Food. they all got eaten!

pizzas, they can choose toppings.
the hugh fearnley ws family food cookbook is great and has loads of recipes that kids can join in with. Stirfry might be a bit dangerous as the oil has to be really hot.

Twims · 18/01/2009 23:11

Ooh might look into the fishcakes - and pizza could be good -
I thought they could help cut and prepare the veg for the stirfry etc.

Putting the topping on Pizza's
They assemble their own chicken wraps (fajita's without fahita seasoning)
They sometimes make meatballs

do they eat salmon?

Cook salmon in tin foil parcels in the oven with thin strips of carrot and pepper whatever and some coconut milk.

The game is wrapping up the parcel after placing all the food inside and then each child gets to eat there own parcel with new potatos or rice.

SlightlyMadScientist · 18/01/2009 23:12

How old are they? Mine chop mshrooms, peel oninons.

Tehy also tip teh tins of tomato into bolognese's and Chilli's. We also encourage them to "taste test" it and decide how to adjust the flavour.

Twims · 18/01/2009 23:14

Ooh chicken qraps would be good - served with a salad that they've made.

The children are 4.5 and just turned 7

DD1 (3.4) helps with absolutely everything if we are one on one, otherwise it is far far too nerve wracking

SlightlyMadScientist · 18/01/2009 23:16

Yes - with teh wraps just stick bowls of stuff onteh table and let them help themself. I also get a mild salsa - which stops it being quite so dry - and they feel special cos it is like the grown ups

SuperBunny · 18/01/2009 23:25

DS (3.4) can make:

*Couscous salad by chucking in tomaotes, feta and olives. He also makes the dressing.

  • Egg mayo sarnies - shells and mashes the eggs, adds mayo & pepper then spreads on the bread.

ToastSmoothies/ Soup

*Oatmeal/ Porridge

*Quesadillas

DS helps with every meal I cook, there's always something he can do, whether it's just fetching the ingredients from the fridge/cupboard, peeling the veg, washing stuff, or measuring it out and stirring pans and pots.

My easy pie, sheets of puff party layered with anything you like then baked.

Goats cheese and roast veg is good, as is spinach ricotta and onion.

You could try making a salad with watermelon, my DD loves picking out the seeds. I do watermelon rocket watercress cubed feta and cucumber.
