How to make a rice cake into an exciting lunch, is it impossible?

I've just ordered a bag of rice cakes in my food order but can't think of what to eat them with apart from cream cheese. I'm trying to eat less bread and thought these might be a good substitute as they are mostly made of air (!!).

Anyone got any yummy suggestions?

smoked salmon and cream cheese?

MrsMattie · 18/01/2009 21:39

Reduced fat houmous with slices of cucumber and tomato. Yum.

Thanks! SS is one of the few things I can't eat (there's something about the texture!), however, I love cream cheese! I also love houmous and cucumber so might try that.

Salmon pate, houmous, any dip, butter and marmite, peanut butter, dipped in soup....
(can you tell we eat loads of them )

Prawns with a little marie rose sauce, cucumber and cheery tomatoes. Yummmmmmmmmmmmm

MumHadEnough · 18/01/2009 22:30

Those cheery tomatoes, should have been cherry but cheery ones sound good too! lol

I just loved the thread title, as someone contemplating going on a diet. It is the quiet desperation: 'Is there anything I can do to make a rice cake exciting?'

Cloudhopper · 18/01/2009 22:33

Or you could reword the question:

"Is there anything I can do to make a rice cake exciting that doesn't involve tenfolding the calories of it, therefore defeating the object."

cottage cheeese with something in it - like pineapple or cunchy veg or something, pepper, some thin ham and a dollop of chilli relish

Ronaldinhio · 18/01/2009 22:34

try the marmite ones they are divine

mogs0 · 18/01/2009 22:43

cloudhopper - lol! In a moment of madness I ordered them when really I wanted the munchies ice-cream!

I have looked after children for the last 13years and must have spent a small fortune on various types of rice cakes for my charges and am yet to find a rice cake that tastes good without lashings of something that's not so good! The marmite ones have always been refused (could be the colour!). I did go through a phase of eating them with an inch of cream cheese but you just can't get away from the polystyrene(sp) texture!

Pannacotta - might try with soup because I can't have soup without dipping something in it!

Mumhadenough - cheery toms sounds much tastier!!

Pannacotta · 18/01/2009 22:50

Oh yes do try the marmite ones, they are a huge hit with my DSs (4 and 1) and I find them hard to resist too...

mogs0 · 18/01/2009 22:51

Do you eat the marmite ones dry?

MrsDoylesMole · 18/01/2009 22:53

chocolate rice cakes are yummy.

Plain rice cakes i would put on marmite, cream cheese, cottage cheese and pinapple.

Ronaldinhio · 18/01/2009 22:54

I do
I hate marmite and loathe ricecakes

These however are delicious...honestly 3pm snack attack in work...perfect

Pannacotta · 18/01/2009 22:59

Agree, marmite ones are lovely dry (or with butter and cheese if very hungry/greedy)...

pamplemousse · 18/01/2009 23:06

Have you tried corncakes? They are quite healthy too and taste a lot nicer, the multigrain ones are really yummy. They are made by Orgran and Sainsburys and Waitrose def have them

mogs0 · 20/01/2009 19:15

I looked for corncakes today in Asda but couldn't find them. I did buy some ryvita though which, even though smelt of cardboard, tasted suprisingly ok! I did put a thin (!) scraping of cream cheese on one and houmous on the other with a few slices of cucumber.

I bought some Marmite rice cakes too so will have them for lunch tomorrow then try the plain ones on Thursday. Oh, how I look forward to my lunches now!!!
