If you open the packet and think you have bought wallpaper paste... that's not a mistake.

wobblyknicks · 01/04/2005 21:08

Newbarnsleygirl · 01/04/2005 21:14

Ready Brek is yummy!

Especially with a dolop of syrup in it!

Make sure you boil the milk before adding to cereal. One time, I didn't do this and my one and half year old did lots of little poos all day.

beansprout · 01/04/2005 21:36

I used to have this stuff as a child. In the 70's there was nothing you couldn't get in powdered form - orange juice (Rise and Shine), dessert (Angel Delight), mashed potato (Smash) and course, good old Ready B.

And my mum, bless her, couldn't quite pull these off. The times I got a mouth full of powder at some point in my meal.... eugh...

Am I right in thinking Ready Brek is not very good for babies as it has a lot of salt?

saadia · 01/04/2005 21:49

Salt is not mentioned in the ingredients, although it does contain gluten.

Don't waste your money on Ready Brek - buy Sainsburys or tescos own, called Hot Oat Cereal. It is just as nice and much cheaper.

Wallace · 01/04/2005 21:55

You are right, it doesn't have much salt - less than 0.1g sodium per 100g. Maybe they have changed it because I'm sure I read a few years ago about a baby that was fed ready brek because it was cheaper than baby food, and sadly died, overdosed on salt.

Luxury, you don't what crap cooking is until you have had my mums meatloaf, or stew, or burgers, or..............well actually everything else was ok, in a I have cooked this but I am not a foodie sort of way, wouldn't kill you, but it didn't leaving you wanting seconds. IYKWIM

JulieF · 01/04/2005 23:20

Wallace, the baby that died was only 3 months old and was also being fed instant mash and gravy granules (both chock full of salt) poor old readybrek seemed to get a bad name because of this.

The parents said they were trying to do their best by giving the baby home made food rather than jars!!!!

Wallace · 02/04/2005 17:02

Oh goodness, poor wee thing. I didn't want to not mention it, just in case there was something to worry about. I hope I didn't scare anyone.

beansprout · 02/04/2005 17:07

It was being fed what?!! OMG, that's awful.

colditzmum · 02/04/2005 18:37

The couple involved were only 16 and 17, and hadn't even been visited by a health visitor. Ignorant, but not cruel.

NotQuiteCockney · 02/04/2005 22:29

You can just get regular oatmeal. Fine-milled oatmeal (at many health food stores) cooks quickly and makes a sort of gloop.
