Fill up for breakfast with porridge - cheap, filling and good for you.

There's an old Delia book called Frugal Food, just been reissued - check to see if it's at your library? Or MUCH cheaper here: www.waterstones.com/waterstonesweb/displayProductDetails.do?sku=6426319&auid=1005.

Haven't checked, but the following might be interesting:

Otherwise, suggestions are Baked potatoes; anything with lentils/pulses (much cheaper if you have indian shops in your area); soups can be pretty filling too, soup & sandwiches are a current fav of ours for 3 nights a week. Use cheaper cuts of meat to make stews, and cheaper fish (eg coley) for fish pie/cheesy fish.

omelettes, jacket spuds with cheese & beans, spaghetti carbonara, risottos can be cheap, bangers n mash with onion gravy & yorks puds

rubber chicken . . . one large chicken does 3 of us for a roast, pie & risotto plus stock usually

fish with home made tomato sauce & either pasta or brown rice is lovely. Bake the fish in the sauce with some grated cheese on top. I did some the other week . . . no idea what kind it was though other than white fish that my dad brought over so it didn't go to waste

Braising steak cooked for ages with mash and veg is cheap n yummy!

Also, if you like chicken, it's cheaper to buy a whole one rather than breast/drumsticks etc; you should be able to find instructions on the internet/youtube...

toad in the hole with mash and veg,
Pata bake with salad and crusty bread,
Spaghetti bolognaise,
corned beef hash served with vegetables,
hotpots or stews made with the cheaper but still yummy cuts of meat!
gammon steaks with mash and cauliflower/broccilli cheese,
cod fish pie,

also there is nothing wrong with buying frozen meat and fish and then defrosting it the night before you need to use it as it works out quite a bit cheaper than allways buying fresh, as long as its good quality frozen though!

lucysmam · 15/01/2009 21:17

how do you make corned beef hash lifesaboxochoccies? I've tasted it & enjoyed it but never actually made it

NumptyMum · 15/01/2009 21:23

Just to add, you can grate an apple into porridge and it's delish .

Pasta with crispy bacon bits and green beans, covered with parmesan.

Chicken and Ham Chowder - We had this tonight with crusty bread and it is lovely and filling but add some pepper when simmering.

Chicken thighs roasted with a pile of cherry tomatoes, garlic and sliced potatoes.

Lentil Dhal

Chicken noodle stir fry: cook noodles in chicken stock cube (eg kallo) & over it steam frozen broccoli. Meanwhile wok chicken (buy small chicken pieces - much cheaper than whole breast etc) with soy sauce, add chopped red pepper/steamed broccoli. Drain noodles, add to wok and mix in 2 eggs, stir for 1 minute or until egg start to looks cooked. That's at most basic. Can also use sesame seed oil in wok for more flavour and a variety of veggies.

Lucysmam - Look Here for corned beef hash recipe - I haven't tried it yet but may do this weekend - You need an egg on top!
