Am I missing something? Lurpack spreadable is no more spreadable than normal butter.

What am I doing wrong? It says to refridgerate it, which I don't so in summer it's fine. Nice and easy to spread.

In the winter my kitchen is probably colder than my fridge but I still enjoy nicely buttered toast. So how do I get the butter to spread? I have tried a hot knife that didn't work.

dh says it isnt lol

Tillyscoutsmum · 15/01/2009 09:52

This is my dh's biggest rant - he actually wants to write to Trade Descriptions

I've stopped using it and use normal butter in a butter dish. At least then it can be popped in the oven/microwave for a few seconds to soften it (whereas the Lurpack pack melts as I have found out !)

hippipotami · 15/01/2009 09:52

I am just marking my place here...
I have the same problem. I keep it out of the fridge, but it is still not spreadable.

Harrumph!

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 15/01/2009 09:52

I kind of bash the top of it with a knife and it softens pretty quickly - but agree it is not as soft as one might imagine.

hippipotami · 15/01/2009 09:53

And then when you try to use it, it tears the bread!! That is my pet hate!

LoveMyLapTop · 15/01/2009 09:55

LOL!
I ggrumble about this every time i make the kids sandwiches.
Even if I leave it out in my warm kitchen for an hour beforehand it still ripps up the bread.
Am switching back to anchor spreadable as cant satnd stuff like ' utterly butterly' or 'flora'

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 15/01/2009 09:55

Oh yes Hippi that's my bugbear infact it's what prompted me to start the thread.

You can microwave real butter? I might ditch Lurpack then and get real butter.

i made the mistake of using lurpack once spreadable? really? hmmph. it ripped up the bread so used to have to soften it first (literally for only a few seconds at most) in a glass ramekin and use it like that. needless to say, i haven't bought it again!

hippipotami · 15/01/2009 10:01

I don't have a microwave, so do the butter-in-the-microwave thing....

Don't know what else to do - refuse to buy spreadable molten plastic like Flora...

SheSellsSeashellsByTheSeashore · 15/01/2009 10:02

I think Anchor is more spreadable but DH likes Lurpack.

Tillyscoutsmum · 15/01/2009 10:04

You can microwave it but just be really careful - it melts from the middle so you don't really notice it and can end up with a runny mess before you know it. About 5 seconds does the trick in our microwave

Eurrrrggghhh - Flora and Shitterly Buttery are vile

MikeStand · 15/01/2009 15:55

I've just been chiselling at Kerrygold spreadable butter. Utter crap. Will go back to butter dish and soften a little in microwave for sarnies in the morning.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/01/2009 19:26

i noticed this

its annoying

i try to rem to get out of fridge as soon as i get up if want it on toast for breakie
def DOESNT spread easily!!

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 15/01/2009 19:29

Get normal butter and put it in a butter dish. It may be a bit hard on really cold winter mornings but not as hard as the so called spreadables.

We have a china dish and the butter doesn't melt in the summer or freeze in the winter - it's magic!

ThornyRose · 15/01/2009 19:30

Why does everyone eat Lurpack?

Why is flora considered disgusting?

differentID · 15/01/2009 19:33

Because it is.
Mind, I can't talk- our main spread is Vitalite.
Agreed, trade descriptions act should be quoted at the manufacturers. None of the so-called spreadables actually are. Anchor is Dreadful.

primigravida · 16/01/2009 03:35

Lurpak is disgusting and misleading. We bought it once when we got a 50p off voucher in the mail. Try drizzling sunflower oil or olive oil over the top or heating up your knife by placing it on the hot toast first until you see the condensation. Some fridge come with special butter conditioners which keep the butter at the right temp. I find keeping it in the door of the fridge helps.

ThePellyandMe · 16/01/2009 04:09

I'm so glad I'm not the only one

I've tried lurpak and anchor recently, both an absolute nightmare to spread. The only bread they don't rip are my own rocks loaves.

Furball · 16/01/2009 06:53

our butter which was left on the side hardened up overnight and wouldn't spread so I bought Anchor spreadable which did the same in the fridge. I now leave that out and it's very spreadable
