Other than carrot, cucumber and celery, what other vegetables can you eat raw in a dip-in-something kind of way? Can you do this with baby sweetcorn?

peppers

liahgen · 12/01/2009 18:30

absolutely,

also Courgette, cauliflower, brocoli, (so my dd says)

GossipMonger · 12/01/2009 18:31

baby sweetcorn
mangetout
broccoli
Mushrooms
red and yellow peppers
courgettes
cauliflower

most veg really but not onions, potatoes or aubergine!

Mimia · 12/01/2009 18:34

Really, raw cauliflower and courgette? Its for my DD who needs to cut down on fruit, but she loves it so much am trying to find some veg alternatives for the variety. Is there much goodness in mushrooms? I also fancy trying the purple carrots I have heard of for her, can you only get those in particular places/season?

Yep - raw cauliflower is delicious!

Try her on raw tinned pulses as well like chickpeas as they are delicious.

Why does dd have to cut down on fruit?

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 12/01/2009 18:38

There is a book written ages ago by a mum and daughter called Raw energy, they advocate a diet of solely raw food to get maximum nutrients (not something I follow) but most veg can be eaten raw.

Oh and I love raw mushroom and avocados

DorisIsAPinkDragon · 12/01/2009 18:39

Oh and onions can be eaten raw!!! Quite tasty in slivers.

Mimia · 12/01/2009 18:39

Well its not nice to mention on food topic but she is prone to toddler diarrohea and too much fruit makes it much worse for her, so I'm trying to makes some changes. Chickpeas sound good she likes hummous.

Oh yes - onions can be eaten raw - just thought she might get bad onion breath and it repeating on her if she was at work!! LOL!

GrimmaTheNome · 12/01/2009 18:42

Raw courgette sticks are really nice in a dip.

Spring onions if she likes them (and you can stand her breath after )

did anyone mention cabbage - you eat that raw in coleslaw...

GrimmaTheNome · 12/01/2009 18:43

having just read the reason for the change, some of these veg might need a bit of caution too, I'd have thought!

Mimia · 12/01/2009 18:46

Yes, I think you are right Grimma, but its a hard one as its getting the balance right for her personally, so I can only try!

Give her a bloody bread stick.

Lotster · 12/01/2009 18:54

If you snap off the stalk from a broccoli, peel it and then cut it in to crudite strips it's really nice. A bit nutty.

Mimia · 12/01/2009 19:00

Thanks for your constructive criticism MadameCastafiore, but she already eats "bloody breadsticks" as you so eloquently put it. I can only assume the judgement you have made on me and the diet my daughter has, but you are very wrong so take your judging pants elsewhere.

If she is prone to diarrohea I would also be careful not to overload on veg as will have similar effect as fruit I think.

Does she like rice cakes?

GossipMonger · 12/01/2009 19:10

ooh I take some of these back now if she is a toddler

I would go with carrots, pepper and cucumber and maybe some cooked cauli and broccoli, raw chickpeas, breadsticks and rice cakes.

misshardbroom · 12/01/2009 20:20

OK, delightful as this topic is (and in the Food section as well...[tutting emoticon]), here I can help. I have one ds with really severe constipation (daily medication as a toddler, the works), and another ds with toddler diarrhea. Makes cooking a blast in this house, let me assure you.

Fruit / veg that make the toddler diarrrhea worse (IME):
any soft fruit
satsumas
kiwis
all pulses
very tomatoey things
very oniony things
sweetcorn

Fruit / veg that are generally OK in moderation:
apples, pears
root veg
peppers when raw seem OK
mushrooms
broccoli & cauliflower

Things that actively 'bind':
banana
egg
lots of milk

So for example, I will give him a plate with a couple of sliced up strawberries or grapes, alongside a load of sliced banana.

[this is the point where purists can point out the folly of feeding my children expensive out-of-season soft fruit. It's also the point where I'll run about with my fingers in my ears going 'lalalalala I'm not listening']

HTH

Mimia · 12/01/2009 21:49

Thanks Misshardbroom, that is very very helpful as I am new to all this! I didn't mean to ask anything other than which vegetables you can eat raw, I promise! Interesting about the pulses and apples, as apples make DD worse and pulses seem to help (hence my other kidney been thread). Good to know about the binding, so perhaps I can mix things up abit like you to see if that helps.
