We had it with bread, cherry toms, carrots, celery, that sort fo stuff. I love it, haven't had it in ages. Might have to do one now!

I've never had it but really want to try it. I quite fancy it with French bread, radishes and baby carrots and veggie hot dog sausages!

Cubes of bread, pickles - onions, gherkins etc - mini sausages, salad, sauerkraut

Yuk. No. Don't have very good lactose tolerance here.

Mushrooms are nice with it (you need firm little button ones). Also, parboiled broccoli or cauliflower.

I bet little roasted new potatoes would be good too.

Love it. Raw cauli and raw mushrooms, chunks of bread.
I've experimented with various cheeses - my fave mix is 2/5 gruyere 2/5 comté and 1/5 appenzell, white wine and the teensiest bit of kirsh.

Love a fondue! Apple is good too. I think we made some sort of onion fritter type things once too, they went down well. Anything that you would normally eat with cheese really.

In desperation we once used salted popcorn

That should by no means be taken as a recommendation - we were utterly pickled and our only other choice was corn-on-the-cob.

Othersideofthechannel · 11/01/2009 17:38

Oh yes, apple is good.

The first time we used our fondue set (one of three, wedding presents), DH got over manly and overfilled the meths container, and I walked in to a pillar of flame and DH looking sheepish - I knew right then he was never to be counted upon in a crisis.

My mum used to make a cracking cheese fondue with bits of leftover cheeses from the fridge. We had it with bread, celery sticks, carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes, crackers, all sorts. And the best bit was when the candle was blown out and the cheese started to harden so there was a slight 'crust' to the cheese but it was still soft underneath. Sounds gross but it's bringing back happy memories of lazy Friday nights!
