Quick, easy things to do with Tuna

I am looking at more meal ideas for my DD who is 12 months. I have never been one for Tuna so to be honest, I have no idea what to do with it but was thinking it would be good to give DD and get her used to it now (DH the most fussy person ever and really trying not to pass it on).

Don't really want to give her Mayo but not sure what else to do with it?

Was thinking about just mixing with some pasta but would it be too plain/try? She is not fussy at the moment really.

Tuna and beans, mixed beans and perhaps a little red onion is lovely.

Tuna pasta bake is good too.

littleboyblue · 10/01/2009 16:19

I mix with cooked pasta, some tomato puree and a spoon of basil. Ds loves it.

tuna pasta bake here too. Good with the tiniest bit of chilli in too. DS (10m) would eat this until the cows come home.

What do you use for the tuna pasta bake?

I just make a tomato sauce with onion, garlic, herbs and a tin of tomatoes. Or the cartons of passata. Cook sauce as you would normally, add tuna to the sauce at the end of cooking. Mix with freshly cooked pasta and put in an ovenproof dish. (If I'm feeling extra creative I'll whack on some breadcrumbs and cheese) and put in oven for 20 mins or so.

My children love this and it is very simple.
Soften an onion, add tin of tuna, mix, add tin of toms, stir vigorously over a high heat then turn it down and cook for further 10 mins.

Serve with spaghetti

or can make with cheese sauce, tuna, sweetcorn and pasta ... yum yum!

Baked potatoes - preferably in the oven so the skin gets nice and crispy. When done, cut them in half lengthways and scoop out the flesh. Mix it in a bowl with a tin of tuna and approx half a tub of low fat cream cheese (low fat gives it a better "zing" but full cream would probably work if you added a squeeze of lemon). Lots of pepper then put back into the skins, top with cheddar or other cheese, and heat through in the oven. Delicious. [roughly three medium size potatoes for one tin tuna and half a tub of cheese. But you can adjust for your preference]

Can I freeze tuna? What about any of these dishes? They all look great but I usually have about 5 min max to make her lunch/dinner and often have her in my arms or climbing up my leg in the process. So I make most meals in advance and freeze them.

Am probably doing a cheese sauce with dinner tonight so could do likessleep's idea, but would like to make in advance if possible.

I reckon you can freeze tuna.

Tuna is lush on pizza

You could do cheese on toast on wholemeal bread and pop some tuna and sliced tomato on top as well - that would be v quick and yummy. Agree that onion and tuna are a v good match too, I like tuna and chopped onion mixed up with salad cream or mayo and put on a jacket spud. Not sure about salad cream for a baby though and have never given DD mayo!

chloejessmeg · 11/01/2009 18:58

So if I make what likessleep has suggested, I can freeze it? I have just made maccaroni cheese and have lots of sauce left to make stuff for DDs freezer draw so would be great if I can do that. Nice and easy but looks tasty and fairly healthy too. DD likes things with cheese sauce so would be a good starting point for the tuna.

Might make a tomatoy pasta thing too with a tin of tomatoes

I fry some garlic and, if I have any, an anchovy (strictly optional) or two in olive oil, lob in a tin of chopped tomatoes and then a tin of tuna. If I have them, I add olives and capers. Serve with spaghetti - one of the rare meals that at least 5/6ths of the family will eat.

going back to what you said about not wanting to give her mayo - I used to mix tuna with greek yoghurt and put it in sandwiches / pitta bread / jacket potatoes when mine were very tiny.
