Gammon joint for dinner

Right. We have a gammon joint for dinner and I have some questions.

  • the Date is 4th Jan - will it still be ok to have today. The fridge has been extra cold and can cook it well?
  • We usually do it in the slow cooker but want to do it in the oven, with coating of mustard. Anybody know how I do this? Do I just take out pack, put mustard on and stick in the oven?

Thanks

it will be fine to cook today. not sure on how you do it with the mustard though.

I boil first to get rid of excess salt then roast and then put honey and cloves onto the fat (scored into diamond).

i have a gammon joint in fridge and it sys to boil for 2 and half hours, then transfer to over for 2 and half hours!

bollockbrain · 07/01/2009 15:55

the honey is for the last half hour, sorry. Maybe same with the mustard?

chloejessmeg · 07/01/2009 15:56

how long do you boil for?

Also heard you can boil in coke?

bollockbrain · 07/01/2009 15:57

glaze sorry

chloejessmeg · 07/01/2009 16:32

SO the coke has to go in the oven not hob? I don;t think I have anything that willbe suitable to do that in the oven. Can I just do it in a sausepan on the hob?

It is on the hob now. It is only a 1kg joint, and I just noticed it is actually a bacon joint not gammon so I hope this is ok?

Have put in coke but it doesn't quite cover it, is this ok? We don't have a big enough saucepan as we have a tiny kitchen.

sorry. according to the recipe the coke goes on the boil, then it goes into the oven for the glaze. reckon it will be lovely done in the oven with the coke anyway. Infact, save me a slice

bacon joint would be ok i think. It is all pig.

chloejessmeg · 07/01/2009 17:34

Anybody know what you do with the coke afterwards? The Nigella instructions (I managed to find online) says DO NOT THROW AWAY but doesn't tell you what to do with it?

They tell yoou not to throw it away as there is a recipe that she uses it for.

Soemthing like black coke soup or black bean soup/.

Has been on here but not got good reviews.

chloejessmeg · 07/01/2009 22:27

It was lovely anyway! I put a bit too much mustard on the outside which is a shame but it was still yummy!
