It was £61.09 !!!!!

It was in M&S and weighed just over 6 kilos (whatever that is in old money!)

I was truly shocked at how much it cost, and yes it was an organic one.

Bernard Matthews have been proven to abuse their birds.

I would rather go without than buy any BM product.

deckthegirlandboywithholly · 23/12/2008 18:48

I'm sure we will all work wonders in the kitchen with our respective festive birds.

Whether they be expensive or cheap!

(Still wondering if anyone has yet bought the £61.09 turkey from M&S in Stratford upon Avon!)

And makes a mental note to chummy up to MRSeanBean's ethical butcher friend for next year.

'Unfortunately the British public won't support British farmers'

But I've just been to the farm shop and spent £60 on a goose and a ham!! Some of us try really hard to support British farmers and ethical practices

beanieb · 23/12/2008 19:26

I saw turkeys for around that price in Sainsbury. I got mine for £18 - feeds 5 apparently!

thisisyesterday · 23/12/2008 19:31

agree clayhead, I think there is beginning to be a turn around, but it will be slow.
the more people buy decent meat, the cheaper it will become and then more people will buy it.
it will just take a while for prices to come down

of coruse, it's never going to be as cheap as raising manky farmed stuff, and sadly there will always be a market for that, but I do think that people are changing how they think about their food.

personally if I could only afford a really cheapo bit of meat then I would go without

Clayhead · 23/12/2008 20:41

Yes, it's about changing habits and expectations to some degree. We only have meat once or twice a week but when we do it's local and free range. We are lucky to have a fab farm shop though.

nancy75 · 23/12/2008 20:43

my mum paid £115 for hers today, its for 6 of us, i nearly fainted when the butcher said how much it was, but aparently thats norma - so glad they always do xmas dinner!

lilymolly · 23/12/2008 20:53

Mine is a happy turkey lived free range all summer but not organic, as the farm is not organically certified, but they have only been fed corn and no crappy anti biotics etc.

We paid £40 for a 14lb turkey which will feed about 10 people.

I would rather go without, than buy anything from Bernard Matthews.

GoodWilfToAllMN · 23/12/2008 20:55

Where? Where?

skrimbo · 24/12/2008 02:26

FFS its a fecking meal, £6.85 for 1.75kg was fine for me and thats free range. That will feed 5 no problem and still have some left over.

£115 for 6 people is pure madness, it will be gone in 10 mins and thats it, what size is that, perhaps it won't be gone in 10 mins, you will be eating left overs for months .

Spagblog · 24/12/2008 03:34

NDTH's turkey weighs more than my 2 year old!

We're having free range duck breasts, at £3 a head.

CantSleepWontSleep · 25/12/2008 11:53

Doesn't sound that much. I nearly bought one from a butcher last week that was £66, and didn't even look that big. Spent £55 on a rolled stuffed breast instead.

QOD · 25/12/2008 12:14

mine is just the breast in a classy tin foil thing - £3 is Iceland.
I would rather spend the money on dd, which we have, then waste it on one meal!
It's up to whatever you want to do though - personally, I don't have the ££ to be ethical.

needmorecoffee · 25/12/2008 12:46

thank gawd for nuts roasts
Whats a '3 bird thingy'?

EachPeachPearMum · 25/12/2008 15:00

The organic crowns were £48 in sainsburys- that is a lot more than last year, when I think teh one we had was £17 or £18.
