Making duck pancakes on xmas day. I bought hoi sin sauce from the Chinese supermarket Win Yip but it doesn't taste anything like the ones in restaurants. It not even very nice. Can anyone suggest an alternative or anything I can do to the sauce to make it more palatable?

If you can go out again, maybe buy some Ayam brand hoi sin sauce?

If you have any heavy jams like plum or marmalade, you could get away with a thin smear of that instead, though it will taste more sugary.

Have a test to see whether mixing the win yip one with a jam will work also.

maybe?

probably have plum sauce in most supermarkets...am thinking that maybe the Wing Yip one is not to European tastes ie. proper Chinese ?

Sorry, just did a search and Ayam is only carried in Australasia, so i guess you're in UK?

Wing Yip Hoi sin, i find is better as a marinade, as it's quite heavy - so don't throw it away. Tesco do an own brand hoi sin and plum sauce - haven't tried it though. Sharwoods is everywhere, but they always taste 'wrong' to me - but may be an alternative.

Go for the plum sauce, it's equally as traditional chinese as the hoi sin. Tho, even being half chinese, i would avoid supermarkets today if i could and use any sweet fruit based preserve/sauce. Hope you have a good one!
