I want a cold starter that will need minimal preparation. Something veggie or possibly with salmon. No pate though as I am pregnant. I can't think of anything apart from cheese & crackers, and that's supposed to be for after dinner!

We usually have a prawn cocktail for starters-quick and easy to prepare.

mazzystartled · 20/12/2008 18:49

we are having fig and goat's cheese salad, with rocket and pomegranate and walnuts, its lovely and - apart from the pomegranate practically zero effort

MegBusset · 20/12/2008 18:50

Ewww prawns

Don't think you can have goats' cheese when pregnant? Otherwise it sounds lovely!

I wanted to some ideas for starts too. We usually do prawn cocktail but want something different this year.
I've ordered some smoked salmon as I have finally released it does actually taste nice, despite looking raw!

potoftea · 20/12/2008 18:51

Oh I was going to start a thread on this very subject.
We usually have melon balls in a sauce made up of cream, baileys, and some of the juice of the melon. But I fancy something different this year.
But yes it does have to be cold, and be able to prepare earlier.

MegBusset · 20/12/2008 18:53

I lurve smoked salmon. Was thinking about smoked salmon and cream cheese on crostini or something.

not cold but what about tomato soup that you can make the day before and reheat.

asicsgirl · 21/12/2008 20:12

meg i waa just going to suggest smoked salmon/ cream cheese crostini. so easy and even toddlers seem to love them. we'll be having them for the third year running

janeite · 21/12/2008 20:13

Rocket salad: Rocket, thinly sliced red onion, some good balsamic vinegar, some shaved parmesan and maybe some toasted pine nuts.

moondog · 21/12/2008 20:14

tomato soup for Christmas Day???
Are you barking Disco???!

Blini and salmon.
Every time.

asicsgirl · 21/12/2008 20:30

sorry for hijack - how do you make blini moondog?

moondog · 21/12/2008 20:37

I do a regular pancake mix but if i can get it i use buckwheat. You need some salt in mix and soured cream as buckwheat blini quite dry (albeit delish)

RumMum · 21/12/2008 20:41

and there was me thinking 'a nice homemade soup' as well...

RumMum · 21/12/2008 20:42

these look like skips to me

moondog · 21/12/2008 20:43

Soups find but it's not Christmas food.
You'll be suggesting a glass of warm sticky orange juice from a can, served on a paper doily on a saucer in a slightly grubby Duralax glass next....

moondog · 21/12/2008 20:44

You can make blini beforehand.I churn out scores the night before.Beats me why people buy them ready made.It takes minutes and is fun.

RumMum · 21/12/2008 20:50

pmsl had to google image this as well....

moondog · 21/12/2008 20:52

Ate, exactly like thaT.

On totally irrelevant note, was gaggging at huge jars of that vile pink Marie Rose sauce on sale in supermarket. POURED OVER NASTY frozen prawns and ibceberg.

Yuck, yuck yuck.

eww!

moondog, you really are bringing the spirit of xmas 1974 to the boards!

traceybath · 22/12/2008 11:26

ok - moondog - am now going to make blinis but just picking your brains a little - what else besides smoked salmon to you put on them?

Do you just stick to lemon and black pepper or use horseradish/creme fraiche etc

thanks!

ShrinkingViolet · 22/12/2008 11:28

my mum does prawns mixed with herby cream cheese wrapped up in smoked salmon. Apparently it's really nice (I don't eat fish so get a slice of melon instead)

moondog · 22/12/2008 18:23

Trace,I have a rapidly diminishing supply of caviar from our time in former USSR so that is delish. Also salmon roe.
Haven't done it with anything else because I don't believe in messing with a classic.Salmon, sour cream and lemon does me fine.
