cheese on toast under the grill then slap another piece of toast on top?

Othersideofthechannel · 17/12/2008 16:21

What's the difference between a toasted sandwich machine and a toastie maker?

naturalblonde · 17/12/2008 16:22

Do you have a George Foreman grill? Can always use that

muggglewump · 17/12/2008 16:23

Just make the sandwich and grill it, that's what I do although I have bought some toaster bags, not tried them yet as they are for dd's stocking

MadreInglese · 17/12/2008 16:23

toast the bread
stick some cheese in middle
squish between two heavy books (sit on the books for extra squishing)
pop under grill for a few mins

yum yum

NewHollyOtherIvy · 17/12/2008 16:23

George Foreman grill - that's what I use all the time. Cheese & ham toastie in no time at all

Lemontart · 17/12/2008 16:24

buy a Dualit toaster and get a sandwich rack bit
A George Foreman grill makes fab toasties and paninis.
Alternatively just use the grill and squish a little

I don't understand

Lightly grill one side of 2 pieces of bread, add sliced cheese, make a sandwich and toast the uncooked sides until cheese slighlty melted - is that what you mean?

aGalChangedHerName · 17/12/2008 16:26

Griddle pan?

Ponders · 17/12/2008 16:26

You can do it in a frying pan, easypeasy.

  1. make sandwich
  2. spread marg on one side of sandwich
  3. put sandwich in warm pan marg side down
  4. spread marg on other side
  5. heat gently until brown on bottom side
  6. flip & brown other side

et voila. Nicer than from a toastie maker IMO.

purplemonkeydishwasher · 17/12/2008 16:27

ponders - that's a grilled cheese sandwich to me.

soooo good... mmmmmm

morningpaper · 17/12/2008 16:27

I make them in a frying pan

heat up pan

place sandwich in it (or cheese in a pitta or ideally grated cheese in a fahite style flatbread) - then heat up on low with a smaller saucepan lid on top to weight down the sandwich so it cooks nicely

YUMMITY YUM

AndaPartridgeOnADustyTv · 17/12/2008 16:28

Wow loads of ideas, thank you.

No george forman grill
I want it so that the cheese is all gooey and melting out of the sides IYSWIM.

Make normal cheese sandwich, put in microwave. Once cheese has melted toast under a grill both sides. Easy.

Ponders · 17/12/2008 16:30

the frying pan trick will do that - the heat from the pan melts the cheese - has to be done on low heat though, otherwise bread is burnt before cheese melts.

AndaPartridgeOnADustyTv · 17/12/2008 16:30

Frying pan/griddle pan sounds good, thank you.

I don't have a microwave either

I really ought to get at least a george forman.

Thanks

You need some Toastie Bags. Cheap as chips & VERY effective.

Zorayda · 17/12/2008 21:14

As a student, I used to make cheese toasties using an iron. Assemble cheese sandwich. Wrap in tinfoil. Iron (don't use too much pressure). Yum... Ironed more cheese toasties than clothes while in Uni.

thisisyesterday · 17/12/2008 21:15

you make cheese on toast, then put another piece on top and toast that.

well, that's how my mum always used to do it

mincepiesmustbedunkedincream · 17/12/2008 21:40

To give it an "edge", drown 2 slices of bread in eggy bread mixture (Egg and splash of milk). Add cheese to one slice, top with other slice ,slightly sealing edges together using eggy mixture and fry in more oil than neccessary.

So so so so good.

tassisssss · 17/12/2008 21:41

IMHO the toastie bags don't work...it's just not the same!
