what sort of string for tying a roast?

of course I should have asked the butcher but need to get on with it first thing tomorrow.

would undyed cotton thread (ie sewing thread) do the job?

probably - I tend to use whatever's in the cupboard. I don't recommend using deep blue wool though - it left lovely stripes on the joint

But any old string that you can get from the corner shop should be fine.

Roskva - thanks for the heads up on the knitting yarn. was thinking about using some cotton yarn I have hanging about. want to avoid the striped effect, that's for sure.

MSQandW - I was in a shop last week and Sir Cliff's Xmas anthem was on. Given how I sneered at it as a narky teenager, it was unsettling to think - "ooh what lovely words"
"Children singing Christian rhyme" still has that "what? surely you could think of a better line" factor about it.
