Higher calorie food for Toddlers?

I have a classic toddler (15 months) who gets easily bored half way through a meal, then refuses to eat more. Problem is that since taking up walking he is now buring lots more calories; and the upshot is that he's waking in the night hungry.
Almost every other night we have a period of screaming which we try to solve with cudddles, calpol, milk etc. But can only be ended with a bowl of porridge which is eagerly eaten, often with screams for seconds, then he goes back to sleep. This is not a habit I am keen to maintain!
Any idea how to get more calories in him during the day...?

let him graze rather than having set food times

how much milk is he having? if it is a lot it may be taking his appetite for food away

one word - mascarpone cheese! Stir it into pasta, very calorific.

cubed cheese, double cream in mashed potato, hot buttered toast, scrambled egg, boiled egg and soldiers (v popular in our fussy household) even a banana before bed could see him through. And cheese pies from greggs have proven effective in emergency situations

Have you tried giving porridge 30mins before bedtime - I had to give my DD a snack at this time as she ate so little during the day. I would not offer any food at night or milk as he might be waking up for them. More snacks during the day and leaving food out in plates but also he might not that be that hungry, my DD seems to live on air but seems to growing fine.

oak cakes are good - 48 calories a pop. My DD2 ate 2 the other day & lost her appetite for tea. Could spread them with butter too. Or a nut butter from health food shops.

Quiche is very high in calorie (bit salty but ok once in a while).

Custard is great for filling them up.

All good suggestions. Could you also think about whether the drinks he's having at or before mealtimes aren't messing with hunger cues? Even water makes them feel v. full up at this age.

too much cheese isn't good though - so try also avocado, houmous, great high energy foods.
