Are Cheerios an OK breakfast for a 13mth old?

DS2 used to let me feed him weetabix for breakfast, but now will only eat cheerios that he feeds himself (his big brother has them for breakfast every morning). I used to be able to sneak a few spoons of weetabix in between, but now he is refusing them. are Cheerios an ok breakfast for him?

I hope so

JustKeepSingingCarols · 11/12/2008 08:09

I mix Cheerios with rice crispies and shredded wheat and both boys love it - ds1 2.5, ds2 10mo.

he wants to be independent so let him i would say.

can i ask do they have milk with them?
my 2 eat them dry and it makes for an easy (mostly mess-free) breakfast!

littleboyblue · 11/12/2008 08:12

I hope so too. Ds has been having lots of different cereals from about 9/10ms

ChirpyGrinch · 11/12/2008 08:13

DD's have cheerios with either bitesize shredded wheat or plain shreddies mixed in, so I hope so too!

ilovetochatupsanta · 11/12/2008 08:32

my dd loves tesco multigrain stars and hoops and kellogs shape krispies, aswell as cheerios.

moondog · 11/12/2008 08:34

All breakfast cereal is overpriced overprocessed crap. The mark up on what is essentially a few grams of overprocessed grain is astounding.
Compare to a bag of porridge oats for an idea of what I am saying.

(You can always rely on me to be disapproving in such instances.)

Cheerios are very sugary, so I would say they are ok, but maybe not every day, maybe alternate with something less sugary or mix in like another poster suggested. Something like shredded wheat bitesize has no added crap and I add a bit of cinnamon to make it less bland. The problem is that the more used to sugary cereal he gets, the less likely he will eat more bland healthy kinds (although even things like bran flakes etc have sugar in them , I wish I liked porridge as moondog suggested).

That said, I'm a bit crap too as I nearly always give DD toast now (she's 18mo) so she can just graze on it and it's less messy.

moondog · 11/12/2008 08:47

Toast better than cereal.
Cheaper too and it's the same thing as shredded wheat to all intents and purposes.
I bloody love porridge.Warming, filling and calming. Also cheap and good for you.

MmeHereWeGoAWassailLindt · 11/12/2008 08:52

My DD is a mystery to me as she LOVES muesli and porridge. DS would rather eat cocopops. He gets them occasionally, we alternate with toast or yogurt and fruit. I would not want them eating sugary cereals every day.

WewishyouaBUMPERLICIOUS · 11/12/2008 08:57

Is it moondog? I always feel bad cause it's the lazy option! I wish I liked porridge, I like the smell of it but it makes me gag, I'm not really into creamy stuff.

I'm a sultana bran and skimmed milk kinda gal myself, although when I was pregnant I was addicted to coco pops!

moondog · 11/12/2008 09:02

It's crushed wheat, same as shredded wheat.
Nothing wrong with it at all.

hullygully · 11/12/2008 09:03

Porridge is oats...

JustKeepSingingCarols · 11/12/2008 09:04

Dh works away lots so when i'm in charge of b-fast, it's cereal, toast if they want it and a yoghurt if any space left!

Dh cooks porridge, pancakes, sausages, bacon, etc. - not all at once, obv!
So they get a balance.
With 2 young ones i think it's more important to have a happy (if slightly sugary and overpriced) and chilled mealtime (esp as they often don't want to eat much later on, well ds1 mainly, ds2 eats loads!).
All for the easy life me

StarlightWonderStarlightBright · 11/12/2008 09:05

I like readybrek because you don't have to eat it. Hate warm cereal, just mix it with milk. DS gets Readybrek and weetabix. sometimes this is followed by desert which is a few cherios or sugar puffs sprinkled on the table dry, or toast with some honey.

A nutritionist friend said that eating the majority of breakfast cereals is v similar to having a marsbar for breakfast.

moondog · 11/12/2008 09:07

Toast is made from wheat Hully as are shredded wheat.

StarlightWonderStarlightBright · 11/12/2008 09:09

I like RB coz you don't have to HEAT it! doh!

littleducks · 11/12/2008 09:35

i wouldnt tbh, we have a choice of weetabix, shredded wheat bitesize/bog ones cut up, or porridge which both ds (8 months) and dd (2) feed themseleves, they have never had sugar cereal, dd thinks cornflakes is a treat and i refuse to buy it in winter!

i dont give toast as then i feel bad if they have sandwiches or soup and bread for lunch

ChirpyGrinch · 11/12/2008 15:23

Both dd's have cereal and toast though, so they need some form of cereal, I always have porridge myself but it freaks DD1 out so she won't eat it.
DD2 does get some but I wont give her her own bowl, I've just decorated!

lynniep · 11/12/2008 15:26

I used to give DS cheerios, but the main bit of his bowl was mushed up weetabix so he was able to pick it up on a spoon when I mixed them together. I didnt give him too many, just a scattering, but he seemed to like the different textures.
