what can I use instead of A1 Steak sauce?

any ideas please? It's for a Nigella meatloaf recipe. The sauce is over £5 though and I dont suppose I'll use it for anything else so I'd rather see if I can find a cheaper alternative. Any ideas please?

TIA

i use whatever fruity condiment i have to hand for that one, spicy mango chutney is quite nice. i don't use as much as she says though.

my dad likes A1 because it doesn't have tamarind in it which most brown sauces do.

thanks fishie. Would soy sauce work then do you think?

It is very much like a bbq sauce iirc.

I would go with brown sauce. Soy is too salty and not spicey enough.

thanks guys. DS has often asked for brown sauce and I never have any so perhaps he'll be in for a treat!

A1 is quite tangy. BBQ sauce may be too sweet? Brown sauce probably would be best...

i think if your sausage meat is good and the mince not too wet then you really don't need half as much as she says, there is already plenty of flavour. you can smell it when mixing anyway, always bung in some mustard or, oh i think pickle might be good.

thanks fishie. I'm going to make them this evening so if you wouldn't mind being on line please in case I have any questions . I'm fairly new to proper cooking and always seem to have a hiccup or some sort. I got my sausagemeat from our great local butcher so i hope it's going to be good. I ended up getting a steak sauce but just a different make to A1 and it was nearly half the price.

how did they turn out? i make them whenever i see some mince or sausages reduced and freeze them. they are very useful emergency meal.

delicious. DS had some cold in a sandwich for a snack and then I just tried a piece warmed up in the microwave. DD wasn't so thrilled though but she's very fickle - she'll probably love them tomorrow
