Question about apple crumble.

Made a couple of crumbles for the freezer, checked a recipe for the quantities for the crumble bit, and double checked that I just chop up the apple add sugar and spice and then cover.

Took one round to MIL and she was surprised that I hadn't cooked the apples first. Like she was taught. I thought as the crumble would be cooking for about 35-40mins so I recon the apples would be cooked fine as they were small chunks.

So I will get her verdict tomorrow, as she was having it tonight.

So what do you do?

I never cook the apples first. My mum is the same.

My MIL however cooks them first into a puree before covering with the crumble mix.

I prefer my way as there is still a bit of shape to the apples iyswim.

I don't cook mine first either.

I usually stew the apples first, with a bit of water, sugar and a cinnamon stick.

I saute my apples first in butter and brown sugar. I slice them thickish so there is still some body there when they go softer in the pan, but still some bite after been in the oven.

I always cook the apples sliughtly first. not too m uch though

dp's mum never does, and he always complains that mine is too squishy.

but I hate firm bits of apple. like it nice and mushy lol

muffinmum · 07/12/2008 22:59

i do both ways,if want more texture then cook first but if no time dont bother just squeeze orange juice over

Great thanks, so hopefully it won't have been lumps of raw apple.

I like it chunky not pureed, next time I might sautee in butter I think just to soften them a little maybe.

I never cook apples first
I use a Jamie Oliver recipe and he says it is not necessary
If it is good enough for him then it should be good enough for your MIL!

I'll tell her that tomorrow will I?
