And what do you do instead?

we do have a roast, but as no-one is that fussed about turkey we usually have a rib of beef instead.

and we don't have christmas pud, as only a few of us are bothered, and it seems so rich on top of a big roast. Previously have had fruit puddings, or just christmas cake and cheese later in the afternoon. SIL is doing pudding this year so I have no idea what we'll end up with.

tribpot · 07/12/2008 17:29

Just a roast of some kind; Christmas is not kind to the gluten-intolerant! No starters and definitely no pud, we do have a gluten-free Christmas cake to have later in the day.

MadamDeathstarOverBethlehem · 07/12/2008 17:32

We have roast beef. My mother used to struggle with turkey every Christmas Day. When I was about 10 she asked who in the family liked to eat turkey. We all hated it, especially cold turkey.

One year my mother cooked curry. That was great too.

I can't stand the way turkeys are treated either.

needmorecoffee · 07/12/2008 17:33

me. We are vegetarian. I do roast pots and peas (and baked beans. sigh) with a nut roast or cestnut loaf and gravy.
This year am toying with idea of Indian takeaway.

nkf · 07/12/2008 17:34

I think the turkey is a tyrant. So big and such hard work to prevent it being dry. And I'm going to abandon it.

I'm doing duck. I hate eating turkey for days on end, and I can still remember the year my Dad had to bone the turkey to make it fit in the oven

jobschmob · 07/12/2008 17:49

Our tradition (for the past three years or so) is Thai fishcakes. We do have probs deciding what else to have with it (and what to make for the kids)but will always definitely have the fishcakes because they are so yummy and now represent Christmas for me!

nkf · 07/12/2008 17:50

I;m doing duck too. How do you make them?

It? I was thinking of cooking two. Don't they tend to be a bit tiny?

Me, my mum and my brother don't like turkey so we have chicken. I don't really like roast dinners as such coz can't stomach veg. One year we had chicken with peppers and pasta, it was lovely

Wildebeest · 07/12/2008 17:53

You dont like vegetables?
are you 4?

SuperBunny · 07/12/2008 17:55

At my Dad's we always had roast duck. Was lovely.

Here, we have Borscht and Mushroom Wellington with roast veg

littleboyblue · 07/12/2008 17:56

No I am not 4, there's no need to be rude

Dragonbutter · 07/12/2008 18:05

arf. hey if you don't like veg don't eat it, it's christmas day!
me, i love sprouts, always have, even as a kid.
don;t really like turkey though.
so this year i'm doing lamb.

Mercy · 07/12/2008 18:07

You write really well for a 4 year old

madlentileater · 07/12/2008 18:09

we have nut roast (cashew and carrot with caraway seeds) and DD1 will have mushroom pate thingy in filo pastry (allergic)

madlentileater · 07/12/2008 18:12

But we also have roast spuds, parsnips, baked carrots, sprouts, veggie sausages, gravy, onion soup to start....then a walk before pudding!

Colditz · 07/12/2008 18:19

We have roast lamb. Well, I have roast lamb, and minted peas, and sweet carrots, and roast potatoes and parsnips nd a rich red wine gravy, and the children have roast lamb and gravy and then they leave it.

purpleduck · 07/12/2008 18:29

We had pizza (for the kids) one year.

It was just us 4, and I really couldn't see the point in being in the kitchen all day -leaving the kids and dh, just for a meal they wouldn't eat

They loved it

Wildebeest · 07/12/2008 18:32

I dont laike no veg.

ThingOne · 07/12/2008 18:36

I don't eat meat and we're home alone this year, so roast beef for DH and nut roast for me. Sorted . DSs can eat whatever they like!

littleboyblue · 07/12/2008 18:42

wildebeest
What is your problem? If that is still directed at me, I'd love to know the reason why you feel the need to be rude and nasty. I've not done anything to you, and if making these little remarks is your idea of a laugh, grow up.

MKG · 07/12/2008 19:31

I do Ham. I prefer it to Turkey any day of the week.

Roskva · 07/12/2008 20:59

nkf - I roast the duck (25 mins per pound + 25 mins over at 180 degrees). I'm only doing one duck, about 6 pounds in weight for 4 adults + 1 toddler. The joy of something smallish is that the roast veggies can go in at the same time. There is a recipe on the bbc good food website for a marinade and clementine sauce for ducmk that I fancy trying.

Anglepoise · 07/12/2008 22:39

One year I did a fillet of beef because everyone said they didn't really like turkey. Lovely recipe from River Cafe - make incisions all over big bit of beef and put in a sliver of garlic and a bit of fresh rosemary, wrap in pancetta, sear all over then poach in red wine. Bloody lovely. Apparently it wasn't festive enough and we've had turkey every year since (Royle Family anyone?)
