Iron rich foods (apart from red meat/spinach!) for fussy 4 yr old please!!??

My 4 yr old is a fussy eater and I suspect his intake of iron is pretty low at the moment. I'll get this checked with the gp, but in the meantime, what can I feed him which may boost his intake?

TIA

Dark chocolate!

Is it iron that you are supposed to take with vit c for max absorption?

dried apricots, chickpeas, molasses, fortified breakfast cereals, most beans,

yep, take with orange juice or something.

and avoid eating it with dairy, because dairy inhibits absorption

you can add also wheatgerm to cereal, and red lentils and other pulses are good. I add a dahl type thing made from lentils to wholemeal rice or pasta which is one of my 3 yr old favourites. Quinoa - can use like rice although is seed - is high in iron and protein. Can get from supermarkets or you can get the flakes from health food shops to add to stews or cereal.

You can give spatone to a child from age 2 - I would try that as well as food.

Lots of breakfast cereals are 'fortified with iron'.

Ovaltine has about 25% of daily requirements in a cup - if they don't like it you can easily sneak a spoon of it into a cup of hot chocolate. Black treacle is also good - can use it in cakes

Thanks for all your responses. Didn't think of ovaltine-that should work a treat!

Also, nuts (e.g. peanut butter) and tofu.

I also give my DCs Spatone (naturally occurring iron-rich water in little sachets) with orange juice, just to be on the safe side.
