is it too late to make a Christmas Pudding?

my Mum insists on buying us one every year (a very nice one too) and gets offended if I even mention making my own. However, she's not coming to us this year and it looks like we might have another family joining us so would like to make a couple of Christmas puddings. But I think you are meant to have made them by now? Or if I make them at the weekend, will they be "mature" enough by 25th?

Although some people think it should be done at least 6 weeks before, it's not too late to make one now. I only made mine last weekend, and we ate a small one then and there (I do this every year; I consider it an essential reward for enduring the 8 hour steaming process!). It was completely and utterly delicious, after maturing for ooohhh 5 or 6 minutes.

Go ahead and make one (or two); it'll be so much nicer than a bought one.

This is what I was wanting to know too. I live in Prague, and the English shop has sold out of suet (my fault for not being there in the middle of Nov.) Plus I'm not sure I can get hold of a pudding basin.... I WANT to make a pudding, though - it's the first time I've made Christmas dinner, and it may not be my turn again for a while...

They think they may be getting more suet in on Tuesday 9th. That's getting pretty close, though, isn't it.

In the meantime I'll do a taste test on a mini M&S one (yes, we have M&S in Prague) plus this other mini one by someone called Matthew Walker that I got in the English shop. I could try Tesco too. But it won't be the same!!

too late?? blimey I'm making mine on the morning!!

try it out first to taste test it if you're not sure, but I thought it delicious

ok, mine is mixed, will steam tomorrow. I know it should have been left to mature for longer, but if the smell of the mixture is anything to go by it will be wonderful, even if only made today.

had a disaster last year and had to make an emergencey pudding on the day (thanks to the wonders of the internet) was OK, but not as good as the real thing. I would make one now, for sure.

Will report back and let you know what it's like. Not the end of the world if it's not great, DD (11) made the most wonderful lemon curd steamed sponge today, will get her to make one for Christmas Day as an alternative to Christmas Pud.
