Foodies - why shouldn't I have a frozen turkey this Christmas? Can you remind me?

Have just done my Ocado shop for 19th December.

Saw that Waitrose have nice free range bronze turkeys for £20ish (frozen) and I've put one in the basket.

But am willing to remove it and go and get a fresh one if necessary. The problem is I can't really remember why the frozen ones are thought to be inferior?

the one you've chosen is defo not inferior, maybe 'they' mean scabby non free range bernards.

Tis very cheap, well done. I have a fresh one coming from Kelly Bronze on the 23rd and it cost £78 ish.

Well yes Laurie, I saw the fresh Duchy Originals ones on Ocado which serve 12 - 15 people and they were £80 something !

Have you got a lot of people coming to you? How on earth is a £78 turkey going to fit in your oven?

I was tempted by that too eekamoose - but I am not great at doing roasts and didn't want to complicate things by having to defrost it as well...

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/12/2008 17:11

i have always brought a frozen one and then defrost it either in fridge which takes forvere or leave to defrost by kitchen sink

how big is a £78 turkey?

Lauriefairycake · 03/12/2008 18:38

erm the £78 turkey is the smallest one - size of large chicken.

There are only 2 of us (dh is veggie) so me and dd will be eating it all week

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/12/2008 21:07

you are honeslty buying a £78 turkey which will feed maybe 6/8 people

OMFG!!! you are insane and prob rich

Frozen means you have to defrost and this can take several days.

If you don't defrost properly, you may not get up to the right temperature during cooking, and you may have a long time at the optimum temperature for food poisoning germs to propagate.

If you buy frozen, please follow the defrosting instructions and err on the side of safety.

We usually spend £30 max for a fresh turkey from Sainsubry. Not free range or bronze, but enough to feed our family of 7 for 3-4 days.

ChristmasFairySantAsSLut · 03/12/2008 21:26

buying a Turkey for £78 for 2 people....madness....you must have money to burn fairycake....

OP...if it isn't a massive turkey, I would think the defrosting isn't any more of an issue as it would be with a large chicken?

Lauriefairycake · 03/12/2008 21:34

I have no money to burn (am very non rich)but it will feed the two of us for five days and I would never buy a non free-range turkey or chicken (uber-animal welfare emoticon )- I would rather go without and indeed the turkey is the most expensive thing to buy, not buying loads of treats or alcohol.

RubberDuck · 03/12/2008 21:36

I got a frozen one last year - I internet shop and was (probably unnecessarily) worried that they'd run out of stock so bought several weeks in advance. Was lovely - it's not that hard to coordinate defrosting - instructions were on the packaging and it took away some of the organisational worries by having it in early.

ChristmasFairySantAsSLut · 04/12/2008 17:14

Laurie...fair enough...although...you see, I would worry about eating it for 5 days, lol...iykwim....unless one is that organised and prepares casseroles, etc...with it the next day...I would not trust anything to be o.k. to eat 5 days later....(and, as you can tell, I would not be organized enough to prepare anything on Boxing Day!)

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/12/2008 19:34

you can freeze turkey

dh does this and we have turkey curry in april

we try and buy free range, but there is no way i could justify buying one for £78

indignatio · 05/12/2008 19:51

I'm very interested in this.

DH wants a tesco fozen turkey. I want to spend vast amounts at the local farm shop on a fresh free range brozen (ex singing and dancing) turkey. If anyone can convince me that we will not loose out on taste, I am willing to give a waitrose free range bronze FROZEN turkey a go.

Who ever said marriage was a compromise had the right idea.
