yet another allergy question

Hi all

First time posting although I've been lurking around the msg boards for a few years now. I'm stumped about my DS symptoms which indicate (to me at least) that he has some kind of allergy. He's 14mnths now, but since 3 weeks old has had colicky symptoms which have never really gone away. So we get very broken nights (up to 6/7 times a night he'll wake with a crampy stomach and try to pass wind etc) and a very tired unhappy little boy. I took him to the GP and he sent DS for skin prick testing which came back negative. Was disappointed as it has just confused me even more. Went back to the GP after a few weeks to say that symptoms haven't changed - i just know there is something wrong. He then suggested taking him off milk. So he's on almond and quinoa milk with some vit and min. supps. For the first week he slept 6 hours in a row (a 1st!)but since then his symptoms are back with a vengeance - bowel ache, wheezy, rubbing eyes , flatulence. Could it be the wheat in his diet or tomatoes maybe. It's just that his sympptoms were there before he was weaned. We also have cats - could they be the problem? I thought cat allergy was more of the rhinitis-y type, not digestive probs. Any advice - we're all a bit despondent at home as we feel we're getting nowhere and we can clearly see that he is in pain. Thanks ps sorry for such a long dump.

My daughter (whos 9 now) went through this since 3 weeks old and my god i soooo know how your feeling!!I had to put her on diff forms of milk then had to weaken it down for a while which really helped (advice from a midwife)..as she grew she had dealings wiv food,,,,i wont go on as will sound boring but PLEASE INSIST on taken her back to the doctors and he should write a letter to the hosp as its been going on for a while now.I would weaken the milk first though so more water than milk.

stick with it. your hunch sounds spot on
insist on food allergy testing
if no good result, try getting a dietitian or paed to advise on elimination diet
You will solve it eventually but nag nag nag to get referred on

Did you bf your DS?

My Ds's allergy symptoms started before he was weaned as he was reacting through my breast milk.

Bloating etc sounds like it could be wheat.

i wouldn't recommend almond milk at that age as you are supposed to avoid nuts at that age, calcium fortified oat or rice milk would be better.

Can you keep a food diary to see if you can pinpoint when his symptoms are worst.

Was there anything else you can think of that he didn't have that week he slept well?

I wouldn't have thought the cat allergy would cause internal symptoms, but could be the cause of the itchy eyes and wheezing.

If you think that it might be milk, you need to watch what products have milk in in some form - I know this sounds basic, but you really have to go through the small print on a lot of things.

Doctors now days dont do food allergy..well mine dont and they want u to find out why u/child is like this so they give u all this "advice" like rub belly..hot bath..oh just what u been doing anyway so its an on going battle...but u have to fight it!!!But yes like trixy said keep a food diary so then u can show doctor next time u go!

berggirl · 02/12/2008 10:56

thanks everyone - will definitely renew the battle to get him looked at further. My GP just thinks it's the 'sort of thing babies grow out of' which is frustrating to hear when you know how miserable it's making them feel. Good point about the almond milk - I'll stick to oat and quinoa. And a food diary is something I must do, only like you said 354kidz to show GP that belly rubbing and a warm water bottle won't fix it!

The very best of luck....my daughter not "cured " to this day!!!

why did the doctor send him for skin prick testing?
was this because he/she suspected IGE allergy?
if so, what other reactions/allergy symptoms has your child had to point to that?

If there has been no other signs of IGE allergy reaction, listed symptoms sound like intolerance.

What the childs weight gain like?
any ezcema?

why almond and quinoa milk?

why not a fully protien changed allergy formula, as it already has vit included etc?

also even when problem milk is removed , it can take 6 weeks for gut to show signs of healing.
Guts dont have any time off to heal, so the process is longer.
6 weeks for young children and infants.

ask to be reffered to a pead immunologist, as they deal with intolerance as well as IGE allergies.
