How much milk should a 2.6 year old have?

My ds, now just turned two and a half, has 200ml warm milk every morning when he first gets up (before breakfast), and another 150-200 ml milk just before bedtime routine (about an hour after tea).

He's going through a toddler fussy stage and sticking to foods he knows and not trying anything new or even slightly different combos so i'm wracking my brains trying to think of ways to get him to eat more.

do other ones of around the same age still have milk am and pm?
would cutting out morning milk perhaps help his appetite?
or is it good for him to have milk anyway for calcium/fluids etc?

any thoughts/experiences welcome!

I can't get mine to take milk at all but she eats loads of yogurts and cheese

my 5yr old still takes a drink of milk twice a day though

My DD is also 2.5 and only has milk at bedtime - 200ml but we make sure she get plenty of calcium during the day (yogurt, cheese etc).

I'm not an expert but we stopped giving her morning milk a long time ago because we found it did affect her appetite for other foods - it stands to reason - they only have little tummies!

My DD still has milk in the morning and at night (and other times too if she really wants it).
She is a fussy eater and it is true that she eats more if she only has milk twice each day. But she is healthy, full of beans and a stunner. I tend to think that small children eat what they need so am happy to offer a healthy range of foods and to let her choose a bit. Milk is healthy I think - children this age need the fat and she drinks plenty of water too.

Oh, mine is 2.6 too.

thanks for your replies ladies.

DS does eat at least one yoghurt and some cheese every day (and sometimes custard too) so i'm not sure if he really needs the milk on top. Hey ho at least its healthy...

3 and 5 both have milk at breakfast and either tea time or befoe they got to bed

as long as your ds is getting calcium through diary foods sucj ay yogurts, cheese sauces etc, they will be fine

as much as i dont think you should flavour milk, if you really want some down them then use a spoonful of nesquik or those straws that have the flavour in them

custard and rice pudding, angel delight might work as well

or a healthy smoothie with banana, strawberry and milk

remember the tablesppoon rule one tbs per portion per yr of age

so it would be 6 tbs per meal and this is sufficient for a 2 yr old my ds is 3.6 and has 9 tbs

anything over this is great but if food intake is of that limit then eating fine

its mainly our worries that its not enough but 6 tbs per meal is plenty

MINE IS 3 AND SHE STILL HAS 200 ML AM AND PM, AND I THINK ITS GREAT IF THEY STILL WANT IT, GREAT CALCIUM INTAKE

HOWEVER WE GET HER TO TAKE HER BREAKFAST FIRST BEFORE HER WARM MILK.

THEY GO THROUGH WEE STAGES LIKE THIS I WOULDNT WORRY IF HE GETS SNACKS TRY AND REMOVE THESE TO MAKE HIM MORE HUNGRY

ds1 likes milks but only has about 200ml a day. he's 5. ds2 on the other hand is 3 and would drink a herd of cows dry given half a chance!!!!!!!!! he still eats and is the adventureous one at eating

my 23 month old has 6oz milk on waking at 6.30 - which buys me a shower and getting dressed in comfort not frantically then still eats porridge and half banana at 7.30 then lunch at 12, nap then 5oz milk at 3 or 330 then tea at 5.30 and another 6 - 7oz milk after her bath while reading stories at 7.20 (earlier if possible though that depends on dragging her out of the bath which isn't easy). Soalmost a pint a day, all slightly warm (she complains that it's "too cold mama" if it;s not at least stuck in a bowl of warm water for a minute

Is this too much?

My almost 2 year old still loves his formula. He also loves cows milk but doesn't drink as much of that when I swap that for him formula. I would like for him to be off the formula and was wondering if I should be trying to take him off the bottle in the morning upon waking and before bed. He finds comfort with this, but will not take a bottle any other time during the day. I have also been reading conflicting reports about whether it is good to give them cows milk for calcium. He has not had a reaction to it and seems to like it. Does anyone have a similar situation?
