I know that 1g is the maximum for a 1yo but wondering if the 'allowance' goes up for a 2yo? DS is 21mo.

they can have up to 2g a day. From the food standards agency:

up to 6 months - less than 1g a day
7 to 12 months - 1g a day
1 to 3 years - 2g a day (0.8g sodium)
4 to 6 years - 3g salt a day (1.2g sodium)
7 to 10 years - 5g a day (2g sodium)
11 and over - 6g a day (2.5g sodium)

I never add salt to anything I make as I don't see the need and there is enough hidden salt in foods already, imo.

Thanks Seona.

I never add salt to food but wanted to try him on some couscous burgers that I saw in Waitrose today -- if he likes them then I will attempt to make my own! They have 0.5g salt in each one so wanted to be sure that if he did wolf down a couple then that wouldn't be a health issue.

I looked into the salt guidelines a couple of years ago, and they seem to be based on achievable goals rather than scientific recommendations. So the message is "you're eating too much salt - here's a lower target to aim for" - like the 5 a day fruit thing.
