About to go for first time. I am prepared to go for it and get nappies / wipes / cleaning products / shampoo / loo roll as well. Is there anything that just isn't up to scratch.

Thanks.

notyummy · 01/12/2008 11:29

crunchy nut cornflakes not too nice according to DH. Everything I have tried has been GREAT!

LeakyDAISYcal · 01/12/2008 11:36

The cold meats are lovely and the parmesan is the same as any you can buy elsewhere (it is stamped reggiano) at a fraction of the price. Beers, wines and spirits are great value as well.

There is a peanutty jar of pesto that we found particularly vile. We also usually buy lurpak spreadable butter and their equivalent just isn't as nice. The breads aren't great (DH says rubbish in fact), and the quality of the fruit and veg can vary, but there isn't anything that I wouldn't try at least once.

Ok off to try at least once! Thanks.

They were putting out all the Christmas biscuits and things today, yum yum

I don't buy butter, cheese of the toastie/sarnie type or bread but the rest is great and their lemon hummus is the best.

fizzbuzz · 01/12/2008 12:58

Cereal is a bit crap, but nappies are fab

hohohoIdolikeTurkey · 03/12/2008 10:20

So far I've been impressed.

it cost 60% of an ocado shop for the same stuff. I couldn't get everything I needed though.

Nappies are great. Shampoo is better at 1/3rd price.

Meat a bit dodgy though.

elliephant · 03/12/2008 10:36

The meat in ours is suprising good and from local producers- free range fresh chickens, dry cured bacon and fully tracable aged beef. Had a fantastic rib eye steak from here recently. Other than potatoes, I don't think their fruit and veg is great- Lidl better. Great creamy yougurts with a fruit layer in their specially selected range. I like their flat breads, pitta breads and iced buns.Toiletries and cleaning stuff fine. Oh and cheeses good - the alpine meadow soft cheese is fab- great as a dip with some of those sesame or olive bread sticks. Don't think the breakfast cerals are great although DD likes the aldi version of Special K with red berries and the malt squares are fine.

notyummy · 03/12/2008 10:50

Yes, meat in ours is good, and would agree with malt squares being nice. Would also agree with the fruit point; I actually think it is ok, but doesn't last very long, so worth remembering when you decide how much to buy.

DontlookatmyNoseImRudolph · 03/12/2008 10:54

Some of their chocolate is quite scrummy

macherie · 03/12/2008 11:29

IME the only things worth buying are ham, cheese, chocolate and chocolate bickies. Did a big shop there once and ended up throwing out so much stuff that no-one would eat.

BroccoliSpears · 03/12/2008 11:40

I found the cereal okay. Muesli too sweet though.
Peanut butter not good (american - too sweet).

Everything else great. I particularly like the washing machine liquid.

Indith · 03/12/2008 14:46

Ours sells the exact same free range chickens as the expensive place at the market for half the price.

Re cereals I think it is variable. Dh prefers the Tesco no added sugar museli but says the wheat biscuit things are fine. Ds eats the Aldi version of cheerios. Not Nestle and have much, much less sugar in.

IllegallyBrunette · 03/12/2008 14:48

Wasjing up liqued is rubbish as it's like water, but other that that most of it is fine.

ruddynorah · 03/12/2008 14:49

the mascara is no good, wand is too big and bristles too far apart.

mousturiser, foundation and their version of touche eclat are all fab.

nappyaddict · 31/12/2008 18:20

Can you get wholemeal pasta or rice there? How about free range butter or organic milk?

hohohoIdolikeTurkey · 02/01/2009 19:12

No wholemeal, no low fat anything not even free range eggs!

KatieScarlett2833 · 02/01/2009 19:13

the instant coffee is truly awful

LoveMyLapTop · 02/01/2009 19:17

I like Aldi a lot but I do noot recommend
cereal
crisps
mince beef

BUT
cheese
cold meats
yogurts tins are all good

nappyaddict · 02/01/2009 20:56

you can get free range eggs and free range chicken aswell.

badgermonkey · 02/01/2009 21:00

Yes, their free range chickens are at least a pound cheaper than the same one at Tesco.
