What do you usually make for the baking stall?

Just wondering...

Our Christmas Fayre is next Sat so shall be doing quite a bit of baking this week. I shall probably make at least one Lemon Drizzle cake, a couple of fruit loaves and a pile of Peppermint Creams.

If you are a baker, what do you usually make for the Baking Stall??

Ah, maybe that's it, I am making them for the ptfa people! No wonder they always tell me that they have sold out by the time I get to the stall

I do gingerbread hearts, (with cut out heart in the middle, as they look nicer and the mixture goes miles further).

Go to town icing them, sprinkles, silver balls, edible glitter, the works!!

Made 150 last time and they looked gorgeous all together and sold quickly.

i once went to great effort making crap cup cakes to find that the cake stall consisted of mr kipling.

now i would forever do mr kipling.

I always do mars bar crispies with choc topping.

There is always a queue for them!

You make more money with small cakes (fairy cakes, brownies and so on) than with whole large cakes. Unless you sell them by the slice - that works well sometimes.

But I find that you cans sell 24 fairy cakes for 30 pence each, but you'd struggle to get 3 quid for the same amount of mixture bakes as one cake.

Great ideas - I love the Marshmallows on a stick, covered in choc and sprinkles - shall be making some of those!

I always man our cake stall and know the fairy cakes sell quick but we have lots of people making those so I go for the loaf cakes as we always have lots of people looking to buy those for their afternoon tea.

I was also thinking of having a side line this year and get kids to ice and decorate a digestive/rich tea for 30p a go!

On the theme of marshmallows, have you thought about Eidsvold/Arfishy's teacups (pictures on one of their profiles and on mine)?

I haven't tested the 'market price' as I have only made them for parties so far.

Just one marshmallow on a stick? How much do you charge and where do you get the sticks from?

I made Pudsey bear biscuit lollipops - a bear's head cut out biscuit baked on a stick, and they were very popular, but the sticks were expensive. And I found that I couldn't fit many in the oven at the time - so they took AGES!!!!!!!!

What really sold Saturday- first thing we sold out of- was mince pies. People are looking for them to feel Christmassy I think.

I'm putting the biggest cake in the raffle now though- better receipt-per-expenditure iyswim.

use wooden skewers. I put 3 on each stick and they sold for 50p. Fairy cakes were selling for 20p.

I always made crispie cakes because I'm hopeless at baking, and my family would laugh, but they always sold out before anything else, so there!

I have been presented with a paper plate by DS when he came home today with "Please fill me with cakes and return to school on the day of the fair.Thanks" stuck to it.

Have consulted my list of things to be done for the school fair and apparently I need to do mince pies as DS is in reception. Now I can do an OK chocolate muffin (will be fine for next year apparently) but I suspect mince pies will be a step too far, especially as we all have lurgy and I'm scared of spreading it, well that's my excuse. So I'm going to buy them, but feel a bit like a naughty school girl at the idea of it for some reason.

Fairycakes as they can be eaten easily by a child & have a handy case to hold them (plus I get to taste a few!!)

ct- yyou can make fab ones if you use ready made dessert or filo pastry and mincemeat- if you soak a few apricots (chopped) in booze then add, or add in a few pecans, nobody will ever guess

I swear by Nigella's fairy cakes

Whack ingreds in food processor - done in 2 mins

Ice with pink icing (water, lemon juice, icing sugar, red food colouring) then whack smarties on top

Never any left

Another good tip for cheats mince pies. Use ready made pastry and mince. Then put a whole glace cherry in before you put the pastry lid on. Cut a cross in the lid and push the pastry down a bit so the cherry shows through the cross. Looks lovely, especially when brushed with beaten egg to make them shine, and even a little gold dust once they are cooled.

a friend made a lovely cake for the sale- 'tbreak and take' she called it- lots of green iced cupcakes arranged like a tree in a triangle and decorated
