Would you consider trying goats milk? I found it much better for ds1 who constantly had a runny nose and ear infections if on cows milk. As for soya, I found all the Provamel stuff very good, a lot of supermarkets carry it and they do yoghurts/desserts which are child-friendly

I wouldn't have thought the ear infections would be down to dairy tbh, so I doubt it'll make any difference. Has your gp suggested this?

Hi Ainsmum - I have posted on your 'grommets' thread too.

Appently there is no scientific evidence that reducing dairy will help your dd but plenty of anecdotal success stories. It has certainly helped ds.

There are lots of alternatives to try for milk and yoghurts but cheese is hard to replace. However the proteins in cheese and yoghurt are different to those in milk so worth trying various things. SOya yogs taste ok. Milk alternatives are goats, sheep, soya, rice and others. Make sure they have added calcium on the label.

We cut out all dairy with my DS and he stopped the repeat ear infections like your DD is having. That was 3 years ago now - there are lots of Soy products on the market even soy custard - really nice! Or you can make Soy custard up with birds custard powder and Soy milk. Childrens soy yoghurts (no bits in) and cartons of flavoured soy milk in his luncbox - the banana and vanilla are really nice. Try Tescos who seem to do a lot of Soy products and a local health food shop. They should be able to advise you on what they have that is suitable. Good luck - it really did work for us. Constant glue ear is a common affect of Dairy allergy

The only dairy free drink that my ds would accept, is the alpro soya chocolate drink. It really tastes quite yummy, he's off the diet now but I still have to buy this for him.

Aimsmum, fair enough! Some good dairy free sources of calcium here

I also make milk shakes with the big cartons of Soya milk - he is not overkeen on it 'straight'! apart from on cereal. Its much cheaper than the small cartons with a straw which are great if you are out for the day or lunchboxes at school.

Easter eggs - try the Health food shop as they will have dairy free ones there - he wasn't overly keen on them though! They do nice small eggs - like the cadbury ones in the sugar shell which do taste nice - they sell them in small bags.

If she likes grated cheese like Parmesan there is a great one (in Tesco) in a pre-packaged triangular wedge - something like Reggio Emilio? Its Goats cheese but is exactly like parmesan. Good luck, hope you get help at the Health food shop - Tescos will be able to point you in the direction of the Yoghurts - the childrens Soy ones are usually in the Organic chiller section (for some reason!)

I found reducing dairy definately helped the congestion thing and glue ear. Try Lactosefree milk which you get in Sainsbury or Tesco. It tastes like normal milk but I'm sure it had an effect. Then 'pure' spread is a non dairy spread - which is good. And apro yoghurts. Good luck!
