Trifle. What is its appeal?

Honestly, it has jelly in it which surely can't appeal to adults? Everything else in it, fine. Traditional recipes does not include jelly apparently.

I can see why children might like it if it is non alcoholic. But I just think the overall combination of cream, custard, sponge, fruit and jelly is revolting!

In case you ask, I have tasted trifle before, shop bought and home made by a competent cook. Can't be persuaded I'm afraid.

FrazzledFairyFay · 26/11/2008 21:13

Nothing, it's vile. I love almost every other pudding, but I just cannot stomach trifle

OOh I love trifle. Home made trifle with, sherry, sponge, fruit, jelly and topped with whipped cream with a cadbury's flake grated on top.

My Nan's had so much sherry in the bottom that we weren't alowed the bottom layer until we were teenagers.
Gawd, she makes a great trifle, my Nan (and a fab cup of tea too, incidentally).

Cream. Custard. What's not to like?

ClaireDeLoon · 26/11/2008 21:18

My mum makes lovely trifle apparently - traditional, no jelly. I think it's bleurgh. Trifle is horrid.

But there's a nice nigella recipe for italian style trifle I like.

MarkStretch · 26/11/2008 21:18

I REFUSE to eat trifle that has stewed fruit in it. It makes me boak.

Hassled · 26/11/2008 21:18

The appeal is in the alcohol. Creme de Cassis in with a blackcurrant/blackberry one, or Limoncello with a lemon one. Don't piss about with sherry - you need poncey liqueurs in there.

God I Love trifle....nowadays without the jelly..but mmmhhhmmm (is that the right sort of yummy noise??) Delia's cheat's chocolate trifle is lush...I can even make it gluten free and not notice!!!!!

Aha, Southeastra, I wouldn't call myself a food snob if that is what you were insinuating .

I like everything else in it but mixed together is just a soggy mess!

I like most puddings as well.

Another one that I don't get is banana custard. FIL always insists on having it when we're over! I like banana and I like custard but certainly not together!

Oh yes, and no jelly. Cake of some sort, proper fruit and its juice or and maybe a bit of jam, a load of poncey liqueur, custard (sometimes I do half and half custard and marscapone) and then cream.

it is a tasty and swwet snack
