I have a half used jar of goose fat left over from last Christmas. Can I use it again this Christmas?

It smells OK, dare I risk it?

Half-open and left over for a whole year?? I think it would be rancid by now.

Try melting it and see.

Anna8888 · 20/11/2008 20:39

Is there no use by date on the jar?

Furball · 20/11/2008 20:39

I am.

SomeKindofWonderful · 20/11/2008 20:40

noooooooooo

sagacious · 20/11/2008 20:41

Erm I wouldn't
Sainsbos are selling a jar of highgrove goosefat for about £2.50 iirc

littlefrog · 20/11/2008 21:31

Taste it! If it tastes ok it'll be fine. If it doesn't, spit it out fast and throw it away!
Might have gone rancid, but if it's been the cool and dark it's probably fine.

hidetheribbons · 21/11/2008 13:05

It has been in the fridge with the lid on. There is no use by date.

Goose fat is expensive and I didn't want to have to buy another jar if I don't have to.

Thanks everyone - I will sniff it, taste it and take it from there. Don't want to give everyone upset tummies!

yuk...for the sake of a few quid I'd bin it!!!

missorinoco · 21/11/2008 13:20

you have just reminded me mine is in the back of the fridge.
taste it, really? won't it taste revolting, off or not?

SexyDomesticatedDad · 21/11/2008 15:50

Should be OK.

What happens to all those geese that supply the fat? Yoy don't see much goose meat for sale - doe sit go into cat food or something - seems a waste - just wondering if anyone knows

lilolilmanchester · 21/11/2008 16:26

Thrifty tip: Trex makes fab roast potatoes, very similar to those you get from goose fat.Without the goose flavour but I never think you get much flavour from the fat anyway, more just the lovely crispy potatoes.

littlefrog · 23/11/2008 13:49

Interesting, sdd, I agree: you can buy raw but not cooked goose. I also wonder what happens to the foie gras geese - takes a lot of birds to make a pate...

BirdyArms · 23/11/2008 20:11

It has a really long use by date on it when you buy it (something like a year) so I think it would be OK. It will smell rancid if not.

sorry try here

Lenlen · 24/11/2008 12:16

that's a year ago. better not gamble than be sorry after.

Furball · 25/11/2008 06:17

thanks for this thread = I said earlier I was really going to use mine and it didn't even cross my mind it might go off so it's now in the bin.

Not sure why I thought it might be OK, but like you say for the sake of a few quid it's not worth it.
