needs to be as fat free as possible, obviously, & also DH hates porridge! Was thinking maybe lots of spices like cinnamon, ginger? Really want to get him eating it so all ideas appreciated, thanks

I also hate porridge but I love bircher muesli

Soak oats overnight in apple juice
mix in fruit and fat free yoghurt of your choice

Much nicer
And if you want a crunch stir in a few grape nuts just before eating

wads · 18/11/2008 12:59

good idea, thanks will go & buy some today

Also you can buy in EAT if he has one on way to work. That's what I do in the week

SuperBunny · 19/11/2008 02:23

I mix the oats with milk, add some cinnamon and brown sugar and raisins, then grate an apple on the top and microwave.

Also good with blueberries and bananas.

I like the oats uncooked too, soaked in juice like CD or with milk like cereal and then dried fruit chucked on top.

wads · 19/11/2008 14:03

thanks super bunny - but I think DH will definitely say no to uncooked oats!

I don't acre for cooked porridge - so soak it and eat it raw with blueberries (they are lovely as the "pop" when in the raw porridge) I also use a yogurt but not good if wanting low fat.

I sometimes soak the porridge in oj instead of milk and put banana ontop.

try the Jamie Oliver stupidly-named but very tasty pukkola - recipe here if you scroll down. Use normal skimmed milk if you're not dairy-free though

ComeOVeneer · 19/11/2008 14:08

I add it to smoothies (uncooked). Fat free yoghurt, a banana, skimmed milk, blueberries, strawberries etc, oats, bran then blitz.

44christmaspuddingsinarow · 19/11/2008 14:09

wads - no point in saying no until he has tryed the raw oats....

SoupDragon · 19/11/2008 14:09

How about granola which is a crunchy oat cereal instead? I've just made a batch following a recipe in Nigella's Feast book. I need to tweak it to my personal taste but it was pretty good.

SuperBunny · 19/11/2008 17:49

Smoothies is a good idea - I do that too. Blitz the oats then add everything else and blitz again.

noonki · 19/11/2008 17:59

honey and raisins every morning in this house or else there is a mutany!

wads · 20/11/2008 12:07

thanks all - am going to make some pukkola & granola. Why do oaty things end in "ola"??

mashed banana and plain yoghurt go well with porridge.
