THAI FOOD - what is it like and what would you recommend?

Have never had Thai food before and we're going to try a Thai restaurant tonight.

Colleague says it's a cross between Japanese and Indian (both of which I enjoy), is this accurate?

What dishes do you have and what are they like?

Thanks

That's a good description. The Thai curries are good but I love all of it: it's somehow more delicate than Indian. The presentation is beautiful. You're making me feel hungry...

Heavenly.
Fish soup or anything with coconut milk is good.

3littlefrogs · 13/11/2008 13:06

It is usual to have a selection of dishes all served together -

soup
curry and rice
noodles
vegetables
small bite size fried dishes like fish cakes, spring rolls, etc. All with different sauces.

Thom yum soup is typical of the hot/sour flavour - it is very spicy, but wonderful - prawn is the best.

If you ask, the staff will suggest a menu for you. Beer or iced coffee is the best drink to go with the food.

Watch out for chillies!

Hope you enjoy it.

Thai omelette is very good too.

Thai is lovely.

Very aromatic, lots of lemongrass, ginger, coriander and basil.

Lots and lots of lovely coconut milk in curries, soups etc.

Can get very very chilli hot, but something like a masaman curry (beef potatoes and peanuts in a coconut milk sauce) is mild and yummy.

ooh are you going to the one by bus station or the one upstairs??? And what time?

Love Thai food

uptomyeyes · 13/11/2008 13:11

Khanom Jeep - steamed dumplings for starter.

Praram longsong - red curry with peanut on spinach.

Green curry.

Mee Krob - sticky, crispy, tamarind noodles

Pad Thai - noddles with veg or prawns wrapped in an omelette served with chopped peanuts, chillis and a sort of sugar/salt mix.

Yum

I think it's much much more delicate than indian or japanese. Like rempy said - very aromatic with lemongrass and lime etc.

You can have rich curry dishes with coconut milk - delicious but quite heavy.
Or they do lovely stirfry type things like prawns with garlic and ginger and onion which I love.
Classic Thai is pad thai - noodles, chicken/prawn, egg and some kind of delicious coating. Yummy.

3littlefrogs · 13/11/2008 13:12

What you do is have a little of everything, with a spoonful of rice or noodles in between the spicy things - you don't just have one dish at a time, IYSWIM.

Some places do serve the soup as a starter, but we always ask for everything together, as per tradition - it tastes much better that way.

Oooh all sounds lovely, thanks! I think we might see if there's a set menu we can order from.

FMV the one by the bus station, have you been?

Agree with 3frogs, Thai food is meant to be shared, so order lots of different things and try it all.

Bubbaluv · 14/11/2008 15:37

Did you like it?

filthymindedvixen · 14/11/2008 16:52

whad'ya have?

MadreInglese · 17/11/2008 09:46

Weeeeell...

It was ok, but not fab really. I had a king prawn starter that was wrapped like a long spring roll, we all swapped starters around and they were quite yummy. For main I had a beef & vegetable dish that was some kind of stir fry with lots of peppers and some noodles. Wasn't so keen on the main tbh, it was a bit bland even though they said it would be spicy, and the noodles were a bit manky, a bit overcooked and stuck together. Overall it was nice but a bit overpriced for the quality I thought.

(will definitely go to the other one next time)
