Beyond bored with meals

I'm desperately seeking inspiration for bargainous family meals suitable for adults and three fussy-knickers children.

We currently eat weekly variations on the following usual suspects: cottage pie, fish pie, fishcakes, macaroni cheese, pasta with roast veg, homemade soup.

yawn.

Tell me your favourite dinners, pretty please.

Oh god Me too I hate it.

doing toad in the hole tonight which is about as adventurous as it gets

janeite · 12/11/2008 17:48

Last night we had veggie hotdogs and corn on the cob. Not too unhealthy if you have it with wholemeal rolls and salad. It was v quick and easy; dd2 11 made most of it.

Everytime there is a What's for Dinner thread i seem to be having Spag bloody Bol - if I never see spag bol again after the kids grow up it will be too soon.

Spanish tortilla sounds nice, but there is no way my kids would eat egg 0 they would claim I was poisoning them.

The only carbohydrates my DD will eat are potato wedges and pasta, no rice or couscous - she is a pain!

Roasted veg and sausages from Sainsburys meals for a fiver is good.

Some kind of sir fry with veg that they like?

Homemade pizza, houmous and sald vegetables?

pointydog · 12/11/2008 17:59

janeite · 12/11/2008 18:01

Big Yorkshire puddings with roasted vege?

Vary the cottage pie by making a spiced lentil bottom and then mashed sweet potatoes on top?

ANTagony · 12/11/2008 18:02

Toad in the hole, mash, gravy and veg

cowboy beans (canned mixed beans, tomatoes an onion, bacon or ham a dash of chilli or a couple of spoons barbeque sauce), tortilla chips and bread (garlic?) (tesco and asda do value ones at about 25p a bigish bag)

Omelets

Stuffed pancakes

pasta with butter, olive oil, cherry tomatoes, garlic, sage and thin sliced ham (very thin sauce but tasty)

Home made burgers (mince and onion herbs etc squished into burger shapes)

Home made pizza - let the kids help with choosing toppings. Or buy cheap cheese and tomato base and bulk up with veg topping and any scraps of meat you've to hand.

Roast chicken one day use the scraps to make chicken and ham pie with left over leek soup as another meal.

MyEye · 12/11/2008 18:16

cheese souffle (a doddle)

great meatballs recipe here (I leave out the chilli)

LoveBeingAMummy · 13/11/2008 16:13

Do they like pesto???

Pesto crusted fish

I used the bargin no frills type fish.
couple of slice of bread made into breadcrumbs
2-3 table spoons of pesto
a little lemon juice (optional)

Mix the pesto with the breadcrumbs and the lemon. Spoon and press over the fish. Bake in oven till fish cooked and topping crispy.

YUMMY

misshardbroom · 13/11/2008 17:55

pesto crusted fish sounds fantastic - in fact now thinking of doing this for friends coming for dinner, never mind the children!

Some really good suggestions here which have reminded me of things I do like but had consigned to fond memory when they were all going through their super-picky stage. Thanks to everyone.

btw - ANTagony (or anyone else), what do you stuff your pancakes with?
