... that he wished that more people asked for extra bones for making stock as they have to pay to get rid of them.

I will def do this every week from now on. Something for nothing

Ooh are they free?

PrettyCandles · 09/11/2008 15:53

Why don't butchers put notices up saying that you can get bones for stock from them? Whenever I've wanted to get bones I've had to ask for them - sometimes they charge, sometimes not.

Tigerschick · 09/11/2008 15:54

We always get bones for our dogs - tho of course we could use them for stock!
They are free and you don't even have to buy anything, often.

Buckets · 09/11/2008 16:03

Actually I'd be abit scared to ask as my butcher is a real wind-up merchant and would probably pretend to charge me when it was free or something and I'd get all flustered and confused like I normally do in there.

Our butcher gave me a free chicken once.

I had just bought an ENORMOUS rib roast, though.

We get our dog bones there for free, they're lovely.

I only realised I could do this when I bought a large roast which the butcher took off the bone for me. When I asked if I could have the bone as well he offered me a load extra. Definitely worth asking.

has anyone tried at a supermarket?

This thread reminded me of the lamb neck bones in the freezer...they're now simmering in a pot with lots of pearl barley.

Seriously? I had no idea. I'm going to ask our local butcher.
