Brussel sprouts - should I even try to give them to my kids?

Brussel sprouts are coming into season and I love them and want to introduce them to my 2 and 4 year old (don't ask me why I haven't introduced them before now !). Does anyone have any ideas for making them more child-friendly other than the plain boiled/steamed option?

Why not just give them to them ? DS (2.5) really likes them.

Otherwise, how about bubble and squeak ?

LynetteScavo · 08/11/2008 21:26

Tell your DCs they are monsters eyeballs and dare them to at them.

Or just give them normally; I'm pretty sure my DC's eat them (if they are hungry enough)

janeite · 08/11/2008 21:27

My two love them; always have. But they won't eat bubble and squeak, much as I love it. You can shred them and stir fry them too I think.

TurkeyLurkey · 08/11/2008 21:27

Just go for it. They might surprise you and love 'em. My two will eat them enthusiastically as long as I melt lots of butter on them.

Furball · 08/11/2008 21:27

they've been my ds' favourite along with parsnips since he was 2 or 3 - he's now 7.

Give them ago, they won't eat them if they don't like them. I just cut them in half and steam them, quite boring really, but they're eaten so never thought to do them any other way

thumbwitch · 08/11/2008 21:27

if you love them, then why do you expect your DCn not to? They aren't demon-food after all!

PortAndLemon · 08/11/2008 21:30

DS (3.9) really likes them plain -- they are one of his favourite vegetables (possibly his #1 favourite).

fourlittlefeet · 08/11/2008 21:31

cook, slice, add cheese, grill? another one we love is blue cheese and sprout soup; absolutely divine for sprout lovers, not sure on kids and blue cheese. DD eats all cheese but at 18 months hasn't reached the fussy stage yet.

My 1YO and 4YO eat them. We call them bugie brains, longstanding joke but luckily neither DC knows what a budgie is!

choccyp1g · 08/11/2008 21:35

IMHO Brussels sprouts are lovely, it's a myth that children don't like them. Obviously some children don't but no more or less than any other veg.

cornsilk · 08/11/2008 21:36

I really like them.

WobblyPig · 08/11/2008 21:42

Child-abuse and adult-abuse in my opinion. Who ever thought that these evil green balls of kak could be categorised as a foodstuff? Sorry but sprouts bring out the worst in me.

LynetteScavo · 08/11/2008 21:48

LOL at budgie brains! I'm going to save that for Christmas day - and really annoy my mum.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/11/2008 10:21

they are disgusting and I cant stand them BUT i would offer them to your children and if they dont like them, and eat most other veg, then leave it

Bubbaluv · 10/11/2008 10:26

I love them and always have. If you cook them in chicken stock it gives them a milder flavour. I sued to think of them as mini cabbages.

Bubbaluv · 10/11/2008 10:27

used to, not sued to!

BCNS · 10/11/2008 10:28

ahh give it a bash.. strangely my lot love them ( please don't over cook them tho )

My kids like them roasted. Toss in a little olive oil, salt and pepper and roast at 180-200 degrees for 40 minutes or so. They actually carmelise a bit and are sweet and delicious.

sunnygirl1412 · 10/11/2008 10:36

We serve them with chestnuts, which the boys like - and they have to have a sprout with each chestnut. They aren't mad about them, but will eat them, and ds2 says he likes them.

I love them though, and will be buying some this week, now I've been reminded about them. One small tip I was given last year, which I'll pass on here. I was always taught to cut a cross into the base of the sprout, but if you don't do that, they stay crunchier and nicer.

Poo old humble sprouts. They get such a bad press don't they?

Two of my dc like them; one doesn't. Dh pretends he doesn't like them; he eats them ok but always leaves a token one on his plate in case I run away with the idea that he loves them.

Bythesea that way of cooking them sounds goegeous. I'll def give that a go. Could be a nice way to cook them at Christmas too .

avaTsar · 10/11/2008 10:39

Rofl! That should be 'poor' not poo! (How apt though )

Seeline · 10/11/2008 10:41

My two like them just plain, boiled. don't cook for too long aas they go mushy. Maybe mine are strange though they love cabbage too

blueshoes · 10/11/2008 10:57

Dh and I love brussel sprouts. Apart from grilling, you could try boiling them till soft, then grinding up in a blender into a pulp, season with salt, butter, olive oil, garlic (you might want to leave this out for young palates but gives it a kick), and roasted peanuts on top.

Sounds horrendous - and I am not sure my dcs would eat it either! - but we served this to the most food-shy person I know who hates brussel sprouts and almost every other thing, and he was converted!
