thinking of making chutney from Nigella's Xmas book. it says that i need jars with a vinegar proof lid? Can I not just use old jam jars etc that ihavve sterilisied? I dont really want to buy any unless anyone knows where i can get any cheap?

old jam jars should be fine, have always used them

Vinegar corrodes metal. For chutney I either use those preserving jars with a hinged lid and rubber seal - they cost a couple of pound each and come in lots of sizes, or Tiptree marmalade jars - the lids have a rubberised seal on them. I've never had a problem using the Tiptree jars.

i used lakeland jam jars for chutney last year and those are basically just jam jars - they were fine. also used one of the preserving jars with a hinged lid and they admittedly looked nicer
