I would throw it away, wasteful I know, but rather that than have a few days sickness.

ClaireDeLoon · 29/10/2008 19:02

Keep it and the packaging, take it back to where you bought it, complain.

I have some mince in my fridge dated 31st October and is has turned a very dubious shade of brown today. It looks dodgy but I will do the sniff test tomorrow as I have a very sensitive nose for these things usually. It wasn't Lidl mince by any chance? mine is and it's the first time I've bought mince there, not impressed

ScareyBitchFeast · 29/10/2008 19:13

my lidl one recently was horrible - this is tescos [hangry

Brown beef of any kind is at it's best, IMO.

Very red meat needs maturing to tenderize it and add flavour.

My Dad was a butcher and unless our beef was running around the fridge, screaming EAT ME NOW, he wouldn't touch it!

Different rules for pork and chicken though!

WhatFreshHellIsThis · 29/10/2008 19:16

brown isn't anything to worry about - it just means the blood has congealed. If it says best before 1st Nov and it doesn't make you go 'ergh' and back away in horror when you smell it, then it's almost certainly fine.

raw meat has a smell, as does blood generally.

Tapster · 29/10/2008 19:19

Had the same thing with mince from Tesco's now I never buy meat from there. I would bin it.

LadyOfRoffle · 29/10/2008 19:21

Tescos mince IME does this alot. I just threw away some well in date as it was brown and funny smelling.

LIZS · 29/10/2008 19:26

mince always goes brown when exposed to air, it is probably fine. Butchers remince theirs to make it red again .

ScareyBitchFeast · 29/10/2008 20:05

well - i had, as usual, given it the benefit of the doubt, but when i added the bolognaise sauce to it - the smell was horrid.

If it smells that bad, then bin it but older mince does turn brown and have a slightly sweet smell which is absolutely fine.
