Not wishing to start a row (fingers crossed for peaceful thread emoticon!!) but was wondering how many people use organic veg etc when making own babies foods? I'm thinking about starting to prepare a few different things to freeze ready for a couple of months time!

Moondog - I have been lead to believe that there has never been Mad Cow in organic beef.... I buy bio-dynamic beef myself.
Anyway I don't buy jars... (did only on very rare occasions like travelling)... and kids are 3 and 5 and only eat organic everything (unless at school).... partly because I feel there is too much pesticide residue and AB in animals.... but ALSO for taste.
Have you ever blind tested the taste of vegetables ??? I have and that really convinced me.
Now I don't usually buy organic in supermarkets as it is both a rip-off in terms of price and quality..... I am lucky that I can buy at farms and with a wholesaler.

DS has never had sugar though. My grandmother thinks I'm cruel

One thing that fascinates me is that I've recently discovered I'm NOT allergic to organic apples (what a delightful discovery that was - I LOVE apples!). But if I eat a raw, non-organic one, my gums swell up, my lips swell up and my mouth and throat itch like crazy.

Velcrobott, can you explain a bit about bio-dynamic beef, and how freely available it is in the UK?

velcrobott · 10/03/2005 22:58

How old is your DS... ine didn't either for a long time... now he is 5 of course he has had some but so much less than any other child I know (I tend to use MUCH less sugar than recipes suggest)

HUNKERMUNKER · 10/03/2005 22:59

11 months - it'll only get harder, I know!

Here you will find more about bio-dynamics - I buy chicken, lamb and beef which arte all BD in a farm in East Sussex. Kids love going there too.... Their pigs are organic "only".

Here is a bit from that website:
How is biodynamic different from organic?

Every biodynamic farm aims to become self-sufficient in compost, manures and animal feeds.
All external inputs are kept to a minimum.
Compost is treated with special herb-based preparations.
Crop quality is improved using natural manure and quartz based preparations.
Ecological diversity is a goal of landscape management.
An astronomical calendar is used to determine auspicious, planting, cultivating and harvesting times.

Is biodynamic food better for you?

Food produced from healthy soil and contented animals will make for healthy people.

Research shows that biodynamic produce:
keeps fresh for longer
flavour is better
dry matter content is higher
nitrate content is lower
has greater vitality

There is also considerable anecdotal evidence to show that eating biodynamic food increases vitality, reduces allergic reactions and brings about an all round health improvement.

How much research been done?
A large amount of research has been undertaken over the last eighty years including: Long term comparisons between biodynamic, organic and conventional farming systems, the efficacy of the biodynamic preparations, research into food quality and much more.

Velcrobott - where is the farm in East Sussex - I would be keen to find a good supplier of organic meat!

I do use able and cole but their meats sell by dates are very short which means most of it ends up in the freezer rather than being fresh

In Forest Row, it's called Tablehurst.
BTW - have a look at conception threads.... I posted earlier this evening for you.
