How to make a credit crunch pizza?

The DC love pizza, and with the credit crunch it could be a cheap but nutritious meal.
However I don't have a really, really simple recipe for pizza base.

Has anyone got one they could share please?

I made pizza last night for first time (from my trusty old Grub on a Grant book). Was delish - from memory, pizza mix:

200g strong bread flour
1 tsp easy blend yeast
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp oil
125 ml of hand-hot water

Chuck all incredients in a bowl, knead for 5 mins and leave to rise for 45 mins. Then knead briefly before using.

Get thy self down to Lidl's and buy a fresh pizza kit for £1.39. It consists if a rolled up pizza dough base, uncooked and a jar of tomatoes sauce. Top how you like, bosche into th'oven. Tra-lah-lah!

Thanks Rhinestone. That looks as simple as it gets.

Cherry- Thanks. I'm trying to find a pizza recipe from scratch that I can get into a routine of making easily. Like the idea of Lidl though.

MAke on bread that's gone a bit hard as well - a glorified cheese on toast (think I'll make this this evening!

MorocconOil · 16/10/2008 11:43

Cupchar- What kind of tomato sauce would you use?

Pesto is super yum. I just toast one side then on the other put some cheese first with chopped toms on the top (from a tin or fresh) with some herbs or spread a layer of pesto & sprinkle cheese.

mimizan - DS really enjoyed 'helping' make the pizza too, so successful all round!

I made a tomato sauce by frying onion and garlic, then adding a tin of toms and a good slug of tom puree, then simmering until it had thickened up (about 20 mins?). Added a bit of oregano. Found this would prob make enough for 2 12in pizzas, so other half has gone in the freezer

Sounds good. Might have that for my lunch.

Just looked in cupboard and have all the ingredients you mention Rhinestone except bread flour. Could I use plain flour instead? Haven't got mozzarella either, only cheddar.

I want to make it NOW.

When my daughter was 16 and working in Tesco's she brought home 10 long French Sticks (slightly hard, end of day ones).
I set about cutting each Stick in to 6 pieces, placing a thin layer of tomato puree and then adding a topping (ham, prawns, pinapple) then covering it with any cheese i could get.
I then wrapped them in cling film and froze them.
The follwing day when my 3 daughter came home from school they asked if they could have one each, so i took 3 out of the freezer and placed then in the oven to heat up, and my kids thought they were even better than the Findus French bread pizza's. After that they wanted to have on everyday and they also let their friends taste them.
It didn't take long to get rid of 60 pizza's out of the freezer.

Yes you can use plain flour and cheddar - it just comes out a bit more scone-like.

lizziemun · 20/10/2008 16:56

I use a slice of bread (thick) spread with tom puree, sprinkle of mixed herbs and grated cheese.

I toast the bread on one side first. Then make the 'pizza' on the other side as if you were making cheese on toast.

MrsTittleMouse · 20/10/2008 16:58

You can use a scone base for a pizza too - obviously it can only be eaten with a knife and fork (), but it's still very tasty.
