Where can I get quinoa flakes in SW London?

I live in the New Malden/Raynes Park area and cannot find Quinoa flakes in the local Holland & Barrett or even in the healthfood store in Wimbledon Centrecourt. Does anyone know where I can get them, without having to order them by post, which ends up doubling the cost because of postage and packing? I'm also looking for brown rice flakes, millet flakes and buckwheat flakes.

Hi Stagiaire. You can get Quinoa flakes in the Holland and Barrett in Walton and also in big branches of Sainsburys (most now have a health food section). You should also be able to find the other items you mention.

and what would one do with them once one has obtained them?

I got some today, what do I do with them?

Good luck with the quinoa flakes stagiaire - I'm not much help with sourcing, being in E. Dulwich.

Suzywong - quinoa flakes make brilliant baby porridge - just cook them up in milk, like porridge oats. Then sweeten with some nice fruit, as they have a slightly bitter note. My two kids loved it (not any more sadly - they have got wise to the joys of cornflakes!).

The quinoa grains (i.e. not flakes) are supposedly a good rice substitute, or add to soups and casseroles. I think they're a bit worthy myself!

thanks Pidge, but my two are also juiced up by the sight of a Kellogs' logo. these are for me. I was recommended it as a suitable food after having...ahem...colonic hydrotherapy

There's Health Zone in Wimbledon, opposite the libary. They might stock it but phone them first. They certainly have quinoa in granules or seeds or whatever they are (not v tasty).

Nige Slater has some quinoa recipes but even so I've not taken the Q-plunge.

suzywong · 18/11/2006 13:53

think about it - you should DO it!

I think quinoa is the poor man's caviar. It has the same texture. Just doesn't taste of much.

Pidge · 19/11/2006 21:42

suzywong - rather you than me frankly

I wouldn't touch quinoa myself - just got a marvellous smug mum feeling every time I spooned it into my offspring.

Caviar ... I think not! More like slightly bitter brown rice, and I LIKE brown rice!
