DD is 2 years old and DH has just read that at this age we should now give her semi skimmed milk.

What do you do??

mine has whole milk (he's 2.2) but I think I'll move to semi soon

iwannatellsomeone · 07/10/2008 20:00

I've always given whole. ds1 is 3yrs 8 months

Just googled, and lots of websites say you can (e.g. food standards, nhs, etc). DD still drinks whole milk atm, but I may do more reading.

I vary depending on how DD is eating. She did go onto semi-skimmed but was then ill with a bug and lost a fair bit of weight so I put her back on full fat.

LoveMyGirls · 07/10/2008 20:01

Whole for dd1 whose 9 as well as dd2 who is 3.

hana · 07/10/2008 20:01

semiskinned for 7,3 and 2 year old here

RuthChan · 07/10/2008 20:02

My DD has been on full fat, but is about to turn 2yo, so I have recently put her onto semi skimmed as it's what we usually have.

As far as I know, it is advised to give full fat up to 2 years and you can choose after that.

Whole for DD who's just turned 3. She only drinks milk just before bed and is a skinny little thing so I won't be changing anytime soon.

Whole. I think that unless there is a reason not too whole milk is good and has more energy in it than semi-skimmed. I think.

I give full fat milk to both my dc (4&2)

Though I realise it makes tea a bit ewww, I drink coffee and so don't care. [evil]

expatinscotland · 07/10/2008 20:05

whole for both - one 2.10 year old girl and one 5-year-old.

they are skinny as reeds and need every calorie they can get.

Dandelioness · 07/10/2008 20:05

I read that recently too, although I think it was on an American site. We still give our DD, who's 3.5, whole milk. She doesn't tend to drink milk every day at home, but has it in her cereal and occassionally a cup in the evening. She also is given milk at school and I'm pretty sure that's whole. I'm probably going to switch my DD over to semi fairly soon, if only to cut down on having to buy two lots of milk.

I don't think there's any problem in continuing to give your DD whole - it has more EFAs for a start and so will be beneficial. The advantage of semi of course is it has less calories - so unless that's a concern, I wouldn't worry about keeping her on whole for a bit longer.

By the way, I know someone who used to be a midwife who used to give her one-year-olds semi. Said it was best for them. Hmm.

It's not the case that you should give her semi-skimmed. The usual recommendation is full-fat milk until 5, but semi-skimmed is OK after 2 if you really want to.
