URGENT HELP: 17 mnth old how much solid vs milk?

Is it possible to overfeed? 17mnth old eats a huge dinner at 5pm then has bottle before bed at about 7pm. Over the last few days he has been drinking the bottle and then half an hour later he throws up everything. Anyone have suggestions? How much milk should he be drinking in a day, he has two bottles daily of 180ml. Please help as dh is tired of cleaning up sick every night

my ds, 19 months, is exactly the same. large tea followed by 210ml of milk at 6.30pm. If your ds has suddenly started throwing up it sounds more likely to be a bug than anything else. But why dont you try reducing his milk and see whether that makes any difference. Or give it to him earlier so it has more time to go down before he goes to bed.

At least your DH does clear it up - mine makes a point of making himself conspicuously absent until it's all cleared up, so I end up doing it every time.

Does your DS have a cough or anything like that? I've found that my DS (17 months) sometimes throws up not long after he's gone to bed if he has a cough and we give him milk just before going down. It might be worth trying raising the head of the bed/cot and seeing if that helps. Otherwise giving a dose of "chesty cough" medicine midway between the last meal and the bedtime drink seems to help for us.

Lukesmummy,

I would tend to agree with GillW. It doesn't sound as if it is the quantity itself that is the problem. Could you give some milk before tea time and make the food a bit later, perhaps giving just a little more before bedtime ?

Our dd (18 months) is going through another of her cough/vomit phases and will wake an hour or so after going to bed and chuck up everywhere - the other day it made it to the wall !! At least dh is very good about clearing it up when he is around. We too are going to try the cough medicine tonight before bed but she managed it despite the raised cot head (as always)last night.

Good luck,

LizS

Thanx , its good to know that I'm not the only one swimming in puke
I have given ds a little less solid at around 5pm and then made sure that he has drunk his bottle and winded himself properly. How much milk should ds be drinking in a day, I can't seem to find an answer for that. Do you think it's possible that part of the "missile projectiles" are his way of performing about going to bed, which in itself is a nightmare. Also, he is teething again, with 2 molars hinting at breaking through.......Please pass me the prozac it's been a rough few night!!!!!!!

To be honest your ds sounds as if he drinks about the same as our dd - she has never been a big milk fan and nor was I as a child. She does usually have a small yoghurt in the evening and occasionally cheese. I'm not sure there really is a right amount by this stage. DS would only have managed a 250 ml (max) bottle am and evening at this age. By 3.5 he had dropped both and now doesn't drink milk at all, apart from on cereal, but eats yoghurt, cheese, rice pudding etc to compensate. He is gaining weight and growing faster than ever before !!

Anyway dd threw up again last night (forgot the cough syrup )but at least she sat up while she coughed so avoiding gettting it in her hair etc.(apologies if too much detail!!). Teddy who yesterday suffered collateral damage resulting in a good turn in the w/machine(long overdue anyway)fortunately escaped unscathed. As ever she is as perky as anything during the day.

You could be right about the teething - dd is also cutting a tooth and this has increased the phlegm which causes her to cough. Something similar happened when she cut molars last summer, although it was not so bad to make her vomit.

Here's hoping for a better night for you tonight!

Just to re-iterate everone else- my 18 month old DS has a bottle in the morning and a bottle in the evening same as yours and has no problems. No advice really other than it looks like it could related to teething or a stomach bug.

It makes me feel a whole lot better knowing that we are not the only ones in this boat.
From reading other messages on "talk" we are also going to try taking him off a bottle and introducing the nonspill beaker...hold thumbs.
I checked his teeth this morning and it would appear that there are 3 different teeth coming through, which I suppose would explain the devil child at night. I do think that I have been giving him too much milk so from tomorrow I'll try a total amount of :

  1. morning cereal - 150ml
  2. morning milk - 175ml
  3. bed milk - 175ml Does that seem right to everyone?? Thanks for the feedback and making me feel a little more normal xx)

I wouldn't worry about it too much. There seems to be too much emphasis on giving them the right amount of milk - I would have thought this is only a big deal when they are small and it is their main source of nutrition. I breast fed DD so she never had a bottle, which meant she started to miss a feed when I went back to work (around 7 months). She soon dropped the evening feed and then the morning feed at 11 months. She would not drink milk out of a cup (although she will have water/juice) so has not had a drink of milk at all since 11m (she is 14m now). She has cereal and at least 1 yogurt/milky pud a day. She is fine on no milk, so I wouldn't worry! (I wonder if this explains her addiction to extra mature cheddar........?!)
