I've just put some chicken that is off into my casserole. I've taken it out but should I throw the rest of the casserole out?

And I should add that this is the fourth sodding time I have had gone off chicken that is in date

So is the rest of the casserole doomed now?
Its only got onions and carrots in with some oil and wine atm but its still all uncooked.

The first time I try to be organised and this happens.

I don't ever trust the sell by dates on supermarket chicken. When possible, I buy and cook the same day - or next day, either from butcher or supermarket. If I'm not going to use meat within 2 days I bung it in the freezer and take it out the night before I'm going to cook it.

I stopped buying food at Tesco when Ocado started to deliver to our area and the shelf life of the food compared to Tescos is amazing - we actually eat everything that we get even if it is in the fridge for 10 days because unlike manky shite Tesco food it is good quality and does not go off.

We also save delivery charge by getting our shopping delivered between 9 - 11pm when Ocado deliver free so that os another £5 you get to put towards your shopping.

harpomarx · 06/10/2008 16:31

also, if you are getting deliveries from supermarkets, I was told by someone who used to work in Tesco (I think) that the stuff sits around for ages out of cold storage so the dates are definitely not to be relied on.

MrsBates · 06/10/2008 16:32

Horrible to waste so much but wouldn't risk it either. I have had chicken go off within date from Waitrose and Tesco recently - home delivered. Waitrose replaced it with no fuss but Tesco said I should have brought it into the store so they could smell it (!!) but due to assertive fuss on my part got a refund.

I never trust the dates, just my nose.

Some packs get left out of the fridge or freezer for a while in store. Have you ever been in the baked bean section and come across a pack of chicken that someone has left there because they couldn't be bothered to take it back to the fridge? Well that will get returned to the fridge section when a member of staff sees it and that could be 8 hours later! Eurgh!

Its shocking really.

I've defrosted all the chicken I have in my freezer from them and its all off
I've even defrosted some beef to make sure it isnt my fridge and thats fine.

I called Tesco and they have refunded me for all the chicken I have bought in my last 2 deliveries and reported it to the store. They're also getting the store to call me.
Won't hold my breath though.

It most probably isn't off - sorry but the packaging doesn't do anything for the smell.

Wash the chx in the sink under the tap before you cook or put in casserole in furture (make sure you dont splash water everywhere cos of cross contamination and wash sink after) then see if it still smells.

I often get chx out of the wraping and it wiffs real bad, but after a wash it is fine - and I cook well and have never been ill.

The chicken is sweating in the packaging and don't we all wiff when this happens weven if we have been in the fridge.

Overmydeadbody · 06/10/2008 16:57

Buy it frozen in future.

Nbg · 06/10/2008 16:58

So its normal to smell like rotten eggs?

I occasionaly buy chicken elsewhere, like Sainsburys and theres no problem with theirs.

Tbh, I think I might just suck the price and buy from the butcher from now on.

I'm a bit funny about buying frozen chicken.

I did once and found a foot in it [bork]
Put me off a little

Does it smell like rotten eggs once you have washed it?

Nbg · 06/10/2008 17:08

I rinsed one pack and it still smelt.

Not the others.
One pack was enough though!

Then take it back to the store and get a refund - food is to expensive to be throwing away and if it is still in date and you have kept the food properly there then the food is not fit for purpose and you should get your money back.

Nbg · 06/10/2008 17:33

I have ivy.
I called Tesco because I ordered online and they have refunded all the chicken I have bought from them in my last two orders and also starting an investigation.

They have refunded everytime I have had off meat without questioning it but its beyond a joke now really.

I'd rather a foot in my chicken than rotten chicken tbh.

MrsBates · 06/10/2008 21:07

A foot? A chicken's foot I hope.

Nbg · 07/10/2008 08:03

Yes chickens foot

Eurghhhh, imagine finding a human foot in your bag of drumsticks!
