recipe for chocolate rice crispies

I was going to make these today as a treat for whole family (and cos I used to love them...). I bought the rice Krispies and some milk choc and then when looked up the recipe on the web, found millions of recipes and a warning not to to use milk choc cos it won't work.... so, the question is... what's the fool proof recipe for chocolate rice Krispies - some of the recipes sounded complicated with syrup and marg etc.
Thanks and BTW what am I going to do with a huge slab of cadbury's milk choc?
Thanks!

Melt a large knob of butter with a big dollop of golden syrup in a pan. Mix in 3-4 tablespoons of drinking chocolate powder, then stir in the rice krispies or cornflakes. It's really quick to do, and very tasty. I made them on thursday for ds2's birthday tea.

I am sure I've successfully made chocolate crispy cakes with milk choc - it just takes ages to set.

At the worst you'll have to freeze them to get them to set - just melt the choc and mix up!

(you might want to add a little melted butter / marge to make the mixture thinner and help it set)

I (or rather ds) just mix bar of melted dairy milk or sainsburys own brand with the crispies/cornflakes and then stick them in the fridge, have never had problem with them setting.

I've only ever used milk chocolate to make crispie cakes and they always go down a treat.
Lou33.....Mmmmmm that recipe sounds yummy, I'll try that next time!

They're delicious made with melted Mars bars too.

lou33 · 23/02/2003 16:57

Oooh now that sounds truly delicious!!

Do you have marshmallow cream/fluff in England? I have the most fabulous recipe for Krispies that can easily be made chocolate, but the marshmallow is the key ingredient.

sjs · 24/02/2003 15:02

Thanks everyone - what's marshmallow fluff... I live in Singapore and I wonder if they sell it here. Our supermarket sells lots of expat items... I'll look out for it... What's the recipe. And soupdragon to make them with Mars bars sounds WONDERFUL.... but would it be a sin to eat them all before my dd got any?

corbin, you MUST tell us the recipe for the crispies with marshmallow. I'm going to hunt in all the shops until I find some as even the thought of them sounds delicious!!

SoupDragon · 24/02/2003 15:27

sjs, of course it wouldn't be a sin you would simply be looking after your DDs teeth.

I'm not sure about the marshmallow fluff stuff - am I right in thinking it should be with the nutella type chocolate spreads & peanut butter? I remember gazing with awe at the array of these sorts of things on holiday in the US!

bundle · 24/02/2003 15:46

I put Mars Bars/Milky Ways plus chocolate in ours and the gunk was too thick to mix the crispies in so had to add milk!

SoupDragon · 24/02/2003 15:54

But what did they taste like...???

bundle · 24/02/2003 17:57

soupdragon, they were delish, obviously
(d wasn't that keen so SOMEONE had to eat them )

I finally got around to posting the rice Krispie recipe, sorry it took so long! Here's the original recipe, it uses regular marshmallows. For some reason my mother uses the fluff, but I tried these the other day and it actually works better with regular marshmallows, the squares come out a bit firmer. The Kellogg's website has an infinite number of variations to the original Krispies recipe, and several chocolate! Rice Krispie Treats

3 tablespoons margarine or butter
1 package (10 oz. about 40) regular marshmallows
or 4 cups miniature marshmallows
6 cups KELLOGG'S® RICE KRISPIES® cereal

  1. Melt margarine in large saucepan over low heat. Add marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat.

  2. Add KELLOGG'S RICE KRISPIES cereal. Stir until well coated.

  3. Using buttered spatula or waxed paper, press mixture evenly into 13 x 9 x 2-inch pan coated with cooking spray. Cut into 2-inch squares when cool. Best if served the same day.

MICROWAVE DIRECTIONS:
In a microwave safe bowl, heat margarine and marshmallows at HIGH for 3 minutes, stirring after 2 minutes. Stir until smooth. Follow steps 2 and 3 above.Microwave cooking times may vary.

NOTE:
For best results, use fresh marshmallows.1 jar (7 oz.) marshmallow creme can be substituted for marshmallows.Diet, reduced calorie or tub margarine is not recommended.Store no more than two days in airtight container.

I must be half asleep. I just read through and it says you can subsitute the creme/fluff for the regular marshmallows. Guess mom isn't as loopy as I thought.
