I remember having toast and jam for my breakfast as a child, then a cup of tea with about 5 sugars in because I couldn't taste it due to the jam.

Is it really that bad?????

I think not incase you hadn't realised....

Ds has just had a bowl of cornflakes with sultanas and dried cranberries, followed by a handful of grapes, a banana and a clementine.

Can he eat too much fruit?

I, however, am thinking about stopping off at Maccy D'S for a sausage and egg mcmuffin meal on the way to see dh.

unknownrebelbang · 04/10/2008 09:34

I've got three that will eat breakfast, and often lots of it. But then they'll eat most times of the day anyway.

They have toast/cereal most days, with a bit more variety occasionally at the weekend, or if DH is around in the week he'll cook porridge or eggs for the younger two.

I rarely buy the more sugary cereals because they eat it for the sake of it and a whole box can be devoured in one go if I don't watch it. (They get their own breakfast these days).

roisin · 04/10/2008 09:35

My boys are creatures of habit. I like a bit of variety myself. But they have had porridge every single day for breakfast for the last 5 weeks! I make it with added sugar and then they eat it with jam or honey or apple puree.

jooseyfruit · 04/10/2008 09:41

porridge with nutella stirred in

FreakyLadyFrightALot · 04/10/2008 09:47

well...this morning ds2and3 ad 2 iced ring-donoughts (sp) each....
but that does not happen all the time, obviously....

normally they have cereal....and that could be anything from not so good one (like chocolate/honey hoops) to healthier varieties (like Weetabix)....my Kids are allowed to choose whichever they fancy, and they tend to choose different ones each morning, sometimes the healthy ones sometimes the not so healthy ones....I reckon, that it won't do them any harm to not always have the healthier options....

But than I used to eat Zwieback (Melba Toast) with unsalted Butter and sugar sprinkled onto it...

Kbear · 04/10/2008 09:48

Toasted muffins with butter and marmite (food of the Gods). Sometimes they have brioche (great for them to eat on the run when i have a train to catch and they are still in their underwear at 8am - COME ONNNNNNN!), they also like pain au chocolat which I buy as a weekend treat, toast, branflakes, egg on toast, beans on toast, malt loaf and glass of milk, cocoa pops on holiday ha ha.

Soapbox · 04/10/2008 09:49

MIne have never eaten sugary cereals as they have a milk allergy. They have toast and marmite/jam, bagels, waffles etc.

DD can eat yoghurt these days so will sometimes have muesli with yog on top.

I think if you didn't buy them, then they would just find something else to eat instead. But if it doesn't worry you and they are not high on the sugar for half the morning then don't worry about it

edam · 04/10/2008 09:51

ds has just had oatibix. If it had been up to me, he wouldn't even know that coco pops or golden nuggets existed. Sadly dh isn't on the ball and has brought both into the house. Sigh... (Although I was secretly thinking 'ooh, I can sneak a bowl of coco pops when ds isn't around'.)

Kbear · 04/10/2008 09:51

Someone bought Krispy Kreme doughnuts into work yesterday - lots of hyperactive lawyers in the afternoon ha ha!!

Bluebutterfly · 04/10/2008 09:52

Mine has toast and honey. Full fat yoghurt (won't eat "childrens" yoghurts) Cereal - he likes rice crispies, honey puffs, special K (yes really - sees mummy eat it). With a glass of orange juice.

In the winter he has porridge with honey in it.

Ds also loves bacon and pancakes and eggy bread and hot milky chocolate (but they tend to be weekend treats).

Kbear · 04/10/2008 09:52

The girl next to me at work went on the website for Krispy Kremes and was telling everyone how much fat and how many calories they contained. Took the fun right out of it!!!

Bluebutterfly · 04/10/2008 09:53

Oh yeah and he loves weetabix too!

Fadge · 04/10/2008 09:53

We had rice krispies today, about half an hour ago, I am hungry again already don't know how any child could last till lunchtime on those, it's only filled with fresh air after all...

onceinalifetime · 04/10/2008 10:00

We only have Weetabix or Rice Krispies as they're the best of a bad bunch. The Which? report on cereals really put me off as it highlighted the high salt content as well as sugar in most cereals and the fact that none of them are actually very nutritious at all. I'm trying to get my dcs to have porridge with fruit. They have eggs at weekends when there's more time and toast occassionally.

Don't have any trouble getting them to eat though.

minorbirdOnElmstreet · 04/10/2008 10:01

My DD (3.5) won't eat anything but cocoa pops for breakfast at the moment. I don't know how this happened, she used to love toast and weetabix!

Fadge · 04/10/2008 10:01

There's also reports that own brand versions of cereals are far far worse for sugar and salt than the proper branded ones.

hoxtonchick · 04/10/2008 10:02

dd is not a great eater in the morning. she has a beaker of milk & a piece of fruit. she eats fabulously at lunchtime though... ds forages for himself, but is limited to healthy-ish cereal (mini weetabix at the moment i think), or toast + marmite. then he has fruit. i refuse to buy cocoa pops etc & he's given up asking. they get those mini selection packs at grandma's though. and ds has been to breakfast club at school on the odd occasion which he likes 'cos of nutella .

onceinalifetime · 04/10/2008 10:04

sp occasionally

edam · 04/10/2008 10:04

It's not that simple, Fadge, I worked on the Which? report and some branded cereals were bad, some unbranded good. Google 'Which?' and 'breakfast cereals' and you might find the report.

Cocolepew · 04/10/2008 10:06

DD1 always has 2 bowls of Coco Pops.

DD2 has a more varied taste, chocolate bread, croissants, peanut butter on toast, rich tea/digestives with butter.

MrsMattie · 04/10/2008 10:06

I let my DS have 'treat' breakfasts at the weekend - sugary cereals like Crunchy Nut cornflakes or Cheerios, toast/croissants/cumpets with jam, french toast/pancakes, sausages etc.

In the week, it's strictly porridge (or occasionally he likes mini shredded wheat) with banana. Fruit and/or wholemeal toast with a little bit of honey if he is stil hungry after that.

I really notice his mood and appetite change if he doesn't have a healthy breakfast before school.

onceinalifetime · 04/10/2008 10:09

edam, did it influence what you buy now? I'm trying not to be too paranoid but when mine have Cheerios for example they go nuts afterwards and are hungry again an hour later anyway.

Lullabyloo · 04/10/2008 10:10

ds has had boiled egg & wholemeal toast soldiers
mango,passion fruit,blueberries & banana
& apple & carrot juice.

He always has a fruit salad followed by porridge or biobiz or homemade granola or quinoa or some sort of egg.Nuts & seeds too & some sort of fruit or veg juice.

shrooms · 04/10/2008 10:33

Weekdays usually porridge with raisins and nuts, but can be anything really even leftovers from night before, and we are all peanut butter on toast fans. (And ahem. Choc. spread.)
