Just about to make old fashioned choc cake from Nigella's Feast, checked recipe and it calls for soured cream, I have none, would natural yoghurt work? This is for a birthday cake for sis for tomorrow, and I haven't got time to pop to the shops?

Bump for cake help (I hate to think of anything getting in the way of chocolate cake)

if you have some lemon juice - add this to the yoghurt - will make a perfect sub.

You could judt have a look for a chocolate cake that doesn't require soured cream?

oopsacoconut · 02/10/2008 19:25

Yes you can use yoghurt but mix in a teaspoon of bicarb first 1 cup yog + 1 tsp bicarb - it makes it slightly sour and fizzy or you could use cup milk + 3tbsp lemon juice + 3 tbsp melted butter.

Not tried the milk one but botbcome from myrecipe subsitiue book.

Hope it works

yoghurt plus lemon juice works for me.

OH thanks all, just popped up to put DD to bed, so sorry for not respnding sooner. Loads of ideas here.

That book sounds brilliant oopsacoconut, what is it called?

OMDB - that's a good idea, however, all the recipes in that book call for slightly unusual ingredients, i just don't have knocking around e.g 300g marmalade or nutella or horlicks etc. Have you got a recipe you'd recommend?
