DS1 practically lives on these... they are blimmin' expensive. Does anyone konw how I could recreat them? They have a list of ingredients:

Organic Oats (44%), Organic Raisins (34%), Organic Sunflower Oil (10%), Organic Apple Juice Concentrate (6%), Organic Coconut (5%), Organic Orange Oil (less than 1%)

Any ideas how I could turn this into a recipe?

Easy I'd guess. Its one of those things that can't go too wrong really.

Work out approx amount in oz/grams (so, say 4 ox oats, 3oz raisins, 10fl oz oil, 6fl oz apple juice concentrate, 1/2 oz coconut), mix, and bake for maybe 15 mins? On greased tray. Cut into fingers when still hot.

I have a no-added sugar flapjack recipe thats similar. Concentrated apple juice from health food shop, its expensive but lasts forever as you need so little.

thanks anarchyaunt - don't know why I couldn't have worked that out for myself...

could you post your recipe as well please?

Just make flapjacks and be done with it.

Tommy · 02/10/2008 15:56

thank you overmydeadbody - I had obviously thought of that but DS1 is Mr Picky of pickyland and he won't eat them

hmmm, well, how about if you grind the oats up first, and blend raisins up to add to them? The organix bars are very soft aren't they? I don't think they will be that easy to replicate at home though, but it's worth a try, you might need to experiment with lots of different batches till you get something resembling them.

How about looking into buying them in bulk for wholesale prices?

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 02/10/2008 17:18

you have all the % there, so just work out haw much you want to make, or find the total weight on the box, and work backwards

eg, for 100g final product, 44g oats, 34g raisins etc

would that work or am i talking bollocks? [grin}

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 02/10/2008 17:19

oh i think AnarchyAunt already said that

Sycamoretree · 02/10/2008 17:32

Oh, yay to this post. My little uns are addicated to these two. Are you listing the ingredients from the citrus one though - they don't do those - only the rasp and apple or the blackberry

Will you report back and let me know if they work out (i.e. will you do all the hard work?)

LadySanders · 02/10/2008 17:39

ds1 age 7 eats about 5 a day of these... i await recipe trials with interest!!

Overmydeadbody · 02/10/2008 17:46

It's not as simple as working out the quantities of ingredients though!

Industrial cooking processes have probably gone into making those bars with just that texture etc.

Will be interested to hear how people get on with the trails though!

Tommy · 02/10/2008 17:54

looks like I have a job then doesn't it?!

Will have a think and report back.

sycamore tree - I think that was the apple and orange one I was quoting - the ones in the green box - DS1's favouriute or he will eat a pink one if there's nothing else

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 02/10/2008 18:14

hm, they would have been made in a test kitchen first, and then expanded onto a bigger scale, so not too different

allowing for variables of oven temp etc

Flibbertyjibbet · 02/10/2008 18:19

If he is Mr Picky of Picky land then I don't think he will accept a substitute that has no wrapper and doesn't, er LOOK the same.
Thats the prob I have with stuff that we have.

SmugColditz · 02/10/2008 18:23

make sure to keep a couple of wrappers to present the substitutes in

Tommy · 02/10/2008 19:30

I won't be able to convince him that they the real thing.... but if he sees me using the same ingredients, he may try them and he might eat them as a substitute when he's eaten all the others!

I think currently, he has 2 for breakast, one at lunch and another at tea time. If he's hungry any other time, he'll have another one
