Tuna - another "no go" food!

Did anyone else hear in snippet on the news this week about high levels of mercury in tuna which mean it is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding mums?
As someone who is veggie and eats a lot of tuna and relies on it for easy healthy meals, sandwiches etc I am a bit concerned about having to try to remove it from my cupboards!
Anyone got definitive info on this?

RobinW, what about sardines, pilchards, mackerel, etc? Don't they contain the fish oil?

Wills...rare steak...camembert...fried eggs...dh's speciality chicken liver, egg, bacon, lemon and garlic spaghetti sauce...I waaaannnt them ALL. And a good strong espresso and strega to finish.
Robinw, your post made me think, as I have been taking a DHA supplement designed for use in pregnancy. But, I find flaxseed oil really cloying to take. Have you considered treating yourselves to organic or wild salmon less often if you are concerned about mass fish farming? And you can also get organic brown trout in some supermarkets which are much cheaper than salmon, and delicious.

Mmmmm, your dh's speciality sauce sounds v yummy, Marina. Think I may try a recreation. Hold out little hope though- just recovering now from an absolutely disasterous attempt to make taramasolata. The flat stinks of fish...

ScummyMummy - I'm impressed you tried!

ScummyMummy · 23/02/2003 22:21

Thanks Wills! I now understand why it's a BIG mistake to try! Feel quite ill at the very recent memory of draining malodourous roe through a muslin...

ScummyMummy · 23/02/2003 22:24

... which was actually a tea towel cos I didn't have a muslin and said disgusting tea towel is now in the bin. YUK YUK YUK- sorry, I shouuldn't be running this past my preggers cyber friends. Hope you are all past the queasy stage!

We started using flaxseed oil some years ago, and although at first I didn't like it (thought it tasted of fish) I have got used to it. Mind you, we always use it in salad dressings or in some other way so the taste is disguised by something stronger (eg poured onto baked potato then covered with cheese). It is sooooo good for you and has the 2 omega oils you need in exactly the right proportions. Also encourages me to eat salad with most meals, which has to be a good thing. Don't buy it anywhere where they don't keep it in the fridge, however (which they don't in Sainsbury's).

robinw- I think that efalex is sourced from mercury free tuna (not sure how they guarantee this- but i have a feeling I've read it). if not then proefa is- although I had to buy that form the states- came in a few days and 50 dollars (including postage) for 6 months supply- It's quite similar to efalex.

Pitty no one told me about the tinned tuna earlier, been eating it like it was going out of fashion. I thought I'd read somewhere that the tinned tuna was OK. Did any one else see the list of '50 things to avoid if pregnant' in last weeks Mirror? Very depressing. must remember not to get pg again.
